| Aneul12-30-05, 12:31 PM | A few sessions ago, my 3d level half elf paladin Nwm found himself in the laboratory of a recently deseaced necromancer, standing before a pedastal uponwhich sat a large tome which radiated an aura of strong evil. Naturaly, Nwm reached out to open the book (yeah, hes got a wisdom score of 10, non spellcasting paladin varient- so it was one of his little lapses in common sense) and found himself possesed by a powerful demon. Now, my DM and I plan to have the demon eventual be discovered by the rest of the party through Nwm strange and gradual shift from lawful good behavior to blatant neutral evil, and his loss of paladin abilities. At this point, the party is likely to perform an exorcism with the help of some powerful NPC friends, returning Nwm control of his body. Unfortunately, his soul will have been twisted beyond repair. The residual evil of the demon and his inate LG nature as a paladin will clash horribly inside him, leaving him Chaotic Neutral, and fueled by a burning hatred for demons. So, I worked up a PRC for the future CN Nwm- based largely on the Warcraft III demon hunter. At the moment, its not perfectly balanced, so any advice (statistic or thematic) would be welcome Tainted Demon Hunter Prerequisites -Smite Evil class feature -Base Attack Bonus +5 -Special: Must have suffered a permanent alignment change due to demonic possesion orr similar exposure to fiendish energies. The Tainted Hunter HD: d8 Class Skills: Craft (int), Climb (str), Hide (dex), Initimidate (cha), Jump (str), Knowledge (Religion) (int), Knowledge (the Planes) (int), Move Silently (dex), Sense Motive (cha), Survival (wis) Skill Points Per Level: 2+Int Mod I can't figure out how to format a level progression table- so here is an overview of the class. d8 hit die, full base attack progression and full will save progression, low fort and ref save progression, and the following abilities, gained at the level indicated by their names: Demonic Resiliance (1): At first level, the Tainted Hunter learns to tap into the fiendish energies which flow through his veins and gain from them a measure of resistance to fire. The Hunter gains fire resistance 6. At third level, the Hunter’s fire resistance encreased to 12. Tainted Smite (1, 2, 4): The Tainted Hunter’s ability to smite evil looses its dependance on divine favor- the power now stems from the dark energies brewing within him, which the Hunter may tap to produce an effect identicle to Smite Evil. Should the Hunter have lost his smite evil ability due to alignment change meeting the prerequirements of the class, he regains that power, and adds those smite attempts to those which he gains from the Tainted Hunter class. He also regains the use of any smite related abilities granted by feats lost due to alignment change. Demonic Fire (3): Tapping into the demonic energies which sufuse his being, the hunter can call a wreath of flames into being around his person. These flames last for a number of rounds equal to his hunter level plus his charisma modifier, and deal 2d6 fire damage to any creature which makes a melee attack against the hunter. This damage does not harm the Hunter by virtue of his fire resistance. Fiend Form (5): At the pinacle of his power, the Hunter may for a breif time take on the physical atributes of a half fiend. Gaining the ability modifiers, natural attacks, special attacks, damage reduction, and wings of his demonic form, the hunter becomes what he most hates, turning the power of the fiends against them. Lasts a number of rounds equal to class level plus charisma modifier. |
| Khael12-30-05, 02:09 PM | I'm not greatly skilled at class critiquing, but i have several points on flavour grounds: 1)smite evil. I don't see this working, i understand the concept, but how does he use the dark energies to basically attack its source? More characterful given the base of the power is smite good. 2) How does he have demonic powers? If the demon is cast out any and didn't use his body (doesn't use his body as in control it near-permanently) he would have no extra well of power. If the demon uses his body as per full possession it may imbue his frame with dark power, but to me this means he simply should gain a half-fiend template during his possession. Personally for fluff reasons i don't see how the class can work without removing some of the characterful abilities. |
