| Marix09-11-05, 05:06 PM | Reading some of the threads here about how the Sorcerer got crapola in the development department got me to thinking. Then, I was reading through one of my old Dragon magazines and I came across the Eldritch Master PRC. Looking at that PRC gave me an idea to fix it up a little, and I came up with the Arcane Initiate: Arcane Initiate: Requirements: Know. Arcane: 10 ranks Know. Planes: 5 ranks Know. Religion: 5 ranks Spellcraft: 10 ranks Must have the Eschew Materials Feat Must have made peaceful contact with an outsider and make a pact with it (any alignment) Must be able to cast 5th level spells Must be a sorcerer Hit points: d4 Skill points per level: 4+Int Skills: Bluff Concentration Craft (any) Diplomacy Intimidate Know. Arcana Know. Planes Know. Religion Profession (any) Sense Motive Spellcraft Proficiency: The sorcerer doesn't gain any new proficiencies in weapons, shields, or armor of any type. Spells Known: 1st: 2nd: 3rd: 4th: 5th: 6th: 7th: 8th: 9th: 1 - - - - - - - - - 2 1 - - - - - - - - 3 1 1 - - - - - - - 4 1 1 1 - - - - - - 5 2 1 1 1 - - - - - 6 2 2 1 1 1 - - - - 7 2 2 2 1 1 1 - - - 8 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 - - 9 3 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 - 0 3 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 1 (0 stands for lvl 10*) Spells Per Day: 1 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class 2 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class 3 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class 4 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class 5 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class 6 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class 7 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class 8 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class 9 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class 0 +1 to sorcerer/wizard class (0 stands for lvl 10*) Special Abilities: 1 Detect Magic At Will 2 3 4 Metamagic Secret (Silent Spell Feat) 5 Read Magic At Will 6 7 8 Metamagic Secret (Still Spell Feat) 9 0 Secret of the Gods (no need for foci when casting spells that need them) (0 stands for lvl 10*) There. I hope you like it. It always peeved me to have to choose carefully which spells were gonna last me throughout the campaign life up to 20th lvl, and the fact that sorcerers couldn't get around needing focuses for the good spells when casting (not to mention just the material components alone!) You see, this is my attempt to address what a whole lot of people (including me) see as nerfed for the sorcerer, without upsetting the balance of versatility of the wizard. By making this Prestige Class useable enough for a bit of variety without overshadowing the other classes should make a lot of people happy (i hope!). :D Please don't flame. Any constructive criticism is welcome! |
| Marix09-11-05, 05:11 PM | Ooops. I didn't realize that my chart for spells known would slip to the side like that. That's what I get for not paying attention, I guess. Anyway, just mentally push each column back under the proper column heading and that's what i wanted to show. :D |
| Marix09-11-05, 05:17 PM | Huh.. 2nd edit. Spells Known will look like this: lvl 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 1 - - - - - - - - - 2 1 - - - - - - - - 3 1 1 - - - - - - - 4 1 1 1 - - - - - - 5 2 1 1 1 - - - - - 6 2 2 1 1 1 - - - - 7 2 2 2 1 1 1 - - - 8 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 - - 9 3 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 - 0 3 3 2 2 2 1 1 1 1 (0 stands for lvl 10*) Hope that works! :P |
| Marix09-11-05, 05:18 PM | Well, I hope you get the idea. :weep: |
| Marix09-11-05, 05:28 PM | Man, I can't believe I forgot to put in the basics! Anyway, for saves, and BAB, its the 1st 10 lvls of the sorcerer & wizard. So, you got two poor saves and one good one, and your BAB is still poor. |
| Marix09-11-05, 09:37 PM | I get looked at 30 times and no response?! Come on! It all can't be that bad! Say something, give an opinion, don't let this die just yet! I would like to know if this is a viable PRC for a sorcerer after 10th lvl! |
| FlameLover09-11-05, 11:14 PM | Seems OK. IT shows how bad the Sorc is that someone thinks they need a PrC to even make them worthwhile playing much but as a PrC it's a heck of alot more balanced than most caster PrCs I have seen. Good job! |
| Schmendrick09-12-05, 01:38 AM | First, change the requirements so that instead of "must be a sorceror" and "cast 5th level spells" it's "cast 5th level spells without preparation." That opens it up to bards (who can take it from 14th level onward, locking their position on the bonus spells known chart conveniently at 6th level spells), and prevents a Sor1/Wiz9 from taking it (which probably wouldn't really be all that bad, but is frankly a little weird and probably not your intention). Besides, requiring a particular class for a prestige class is frowned upon in the PrC creation guidelines set in the DMG. |
| Marix09-12-05, 09:00 PM | OK. I can do that. I happen to like bards, too, so that should work out ok. Thanks for the suggestion! |
