The DMG does not say that they can't be put into an arrow, its very vague. I'm looking to imbue, say enervation into an arrow and fire it upon a foe... assuming the shot hits, that should make for normal arrow damage, plus 1d4 negative levels, yeah? Perhaps when the arrow strikes, causing the spell to go off, and I roll another attack roll to see if the spell hits? assuming it is ok to imbue attack roll type spells, how would one score a critical with them? Would spells be on a different scale as the arrows? For example, a wizard makes an attempt to enervation his foe infront of him and rolls a natural 20 and then confirms it, bam now that spell turns into 2d4. But say that same wizard now has levels of Arcane Archer, and imbues an arrow, with a natural 20 does the spell do a crit of x3 (as the bow) or is it just a normal critical of x2 spell and x3 arrow? Thanks for any imput. |
| gooru02-07-04, 03:15 PM | that is a yummi trick:) I would say that, like other spells, they are not modified by criticals, other than they hit:) So, a war pick with the flaming burst that criticals isn't doing a d6x4 + 3d10x10, its just doing a d6x4 +3d10. As far as your spell goes, I say why shouldn't it be able to go on the arrow? |

A spell attack that requires no attack roll cannot score a critical hit. so, if you've got yourself an enervation or a ray of enfeeblement, those should be able to be critted. EDIT: i dont think my first draft was even english... |

When the arrow is fired, the spell’s area is centered on where the arrow lands, even if the spell could normally be centered only on the caster. Emphases mine Evervation is not an allowable spell to be imbued. You cannot ever 'crit' the spell imbued in an arrow because the only spells allowed to be imbued (area of effect spells, such as fireball) do not normally have attack rolls, and therefore cannot crit. Now, a DM could rule that the imbued AoE spell can crit the individual hit with the arrow, but it would only be a house rule. |
| gooru02-07-04, 04:26 PM | alright... I officially stand corrected... but, IMC, I still don't see why not:-P But, the arcane archer would have to imbue his own spell. I'd treat it like the Master Brewer from one of the FR books... sure, you can put a Prismatic Sphere in a potion, to activate it, you must drink it:-P |
