A question about Monks and multi-classing [Archive] - Wizards Community

I apologize if this is a redundant thread, but I just have a quick question about Monks. The PHB says that a Monk can multiclass, but if he advances in a class other than Monk, he can no longer "return" to the Monk class. Do I understand that correctly?

For instance, a 3rd lvl Monk picks up 1 lvl of Ranger. He cannot progress past 3rd lvl Monk?

Or- If a 3rd lvl ranger picks up 1 lvl of Monk, he must continue in Monk or else stop his Monk progression?

I understand that Monk is a powerful class, and that Oriental Adv. doesn't follow this rule, I just wanted to make sure I had the PHB down. tnx

Ex-Monks
A monk who becomes nonlawful cannot gain new levels as a monk but retains all monk abilities.
Like a member of any other class, a monk may be a multiclass character, but multiclass monks face a special restriction. A monk who gains a new class or (if already multiclass) raises another class by a level may never again raise her monk level, though she retains all her monk abilities.

In certain campaign worlds and with DM discretion, Monastic Orders can allow free multiclassing with usually a single class or condition.

Example: Monks of the Old Order in Forgotten Realms allow free multiclassing into any class, so long as the monk level is higher.

Monks of the Dark Moon in FR allow free multiclassing into either rogue or sorcerer.

Just remember this is entirely up to the DM if this is allowed.

08-17-04, 12:29 PM That is true, however, if you play in Forgotten Realms setting, certain monastic orders are allowed to multiclass, to a degree.

For example, The Order of the Yellow Rose Monks are allowed to multiclass freely as Rangers. I forget the exact page, its near the beginning, right acter the sub-races.

There is also the same deal with Paladins. Most are allowed to multiclass with cleric of the same diety, Dwarven Paladins of Moradin can multiclass freely as Clerics, Fighters, and Dwarven Defenders, iirc.

There might be a feat somewhere, Monastic Training(?) from BoED(?) maybe, that lets a monk multiclass with another, but don't quote me ;)

good stuff though, Ranger-Monks. Love them. My favorite type of character to play, if I get good stats. Go 2 lvls of Monk, 4 lvls of Ranger, then the almighty Dervish. If you really want to go nuts, after two levels of Dervish, grab two levels of Shadow Dancer. Oh, the possibilities.

But that's just me. Sorry about ranting on. For the most part, you cannot multiclass as monks unless you're playing in Forgotten Realms or the DM allows minor exceptions

Correct, correct, and correct.

Not really powerful. Both paladin and monk are more or less balanced with the other classes. Flavor-wise, or should I say, it is the mindset that a straigh-laced paladin must stay on his path with full devotion or leave the order permanently, the same goes with the monastic and ascetic monk.

08-23-04, 08:46 PM There's a feat in Eberron 'Monastic training', which allows you to multiclass as a Monk normally. It's pretty nifty.
