themaskedknight 02-23-05, 10:26 PM	I was just wondering about how rangers get their companions, the PHB and DMG just say that the ranger gets one at 4th level. but is it like the druid or do they get the companion another way? while i'm asking how do the wizards, sorcerers, druids , and rangers (and any other class that has a familiar or companion) recieve their animals??? thanks for any help.
Lexarius 02-23-05, 10:53 PM	Rangers get their companions in the same way that druids do, however you play that. You might rule that the druid's companion comes from the local wildlife (so no acquiring polar bears in the desert). Or, you might decide that it works something like the druid's normal Summon Nature's Ally ability: During the 24 hour ritual, the animal is magically brought from elsewhere. Sorcerers and Wizards have a class ability called "Summon Familiar", so it seems pretty clear that the creature is initially summoned. That said, it probably wouldn't be out of line for the arcanist to supply his own animal and skip the summoning part, as long as he qualifies to bind with that creature. The 3.5 paladin is fairly clear that his mount is summoned. It comes when he calls it and goes away after a set duration.
