Just wondering about the bonus spells that a dragon disciple gains. The dungeon masters guide says they are gained as if having a high ability score, so does that mean that they are bonus spells that are known by your character? or are they bonus spell slots for added casting power?

I know this may sound dumb but I need this clarified. Please give me a hand!

It's a bonus spell per day.

They are, like bonus spells due to a high ability modifier, bonus spell slots per day. They do not improve spells known.

I am not going to repeat what everybody else is saying (they are right) but I wan't you to have rethink about the class. I am not saying that this class is wrong but it can be difficult for a DM to incorporate you (and your eventual trans-formation) into storylines for your adventure.
Dragon Disciple is an awesome character class to roleplay. I played one and loved it (the usual story about the sorceror slowly discovers that not only does he have Draconic Blood, but is actually a half-dragon trapped in human form kind of thing).
Trust me when I say that Dragon Disciples are better off as an NPC presteige class. Here's why;

1) If you are travelling around human lands, be ready to be run out of town by very paranoid townsfolk. I don't know how many towns my poor Jezhara had to flee ("Just because I may have horns, I am not a Demon, just a Dragon in disguise"-Yeah Right). the rest of the party grew quite irate and I had to hide out of town for the rest of the campaign (Mid to High level random encounters when you are waiting for your friends to come back are pretty ----ed up).

2) If you paid careful attention to the DMG, you will notice that the Dragon Disciple is eventually compelled to leave their party / home and seek out dragons in an attempt to understand their nature and live with and learn from them. If you aren't planning a long term character then that's great. But, why spend all this effort to get this far (in levels), just to have your character fly away to some lair for the rest of their life-It doesn't make sense.

I am not trying to dis the Dragon Disciple. I just think people need to be carefull about what they choose. If you want to retire a character to be used in the furture as an NPC, they are brilliant. I went through the change to dragon and eventually took a place amongst my kin.

Now what about a character with a half-dragon template. It will have most of the things you are after and more. Or, you could ask your DM to play a half-dragon Dragon Disciple.........NOW THAT'S SCARY!

Now I have my DMG right here and it does not say anything about a dragon disciple leaving the party to be with his/her own dragon kin. All it say is that many pursue adventure to find out more about their draconis heritage and are drawn to to areas know n to harbor dragons. Nothing about leaving and becoming a NPC! CHeck it out for yourself (pg 183, DMG v.3.5)

But illegal by the rules, since you can't advance in dragon disciple if you are already a half-dragon.

And you could play a setting in which dragons are venerated. That way, your character will be loved by every town he comes across.

I've got a bit off egg on my face this time, not because Im stupid, just forgot my brains for a minute. I forgot to include 2 things.
1. I believe (I hope I'm right) that the key word used in the DMG is "compelled", you know compelled like compulsion or charmed. I had a talk about it with my DM and that was the way that we both interpereted it. So maybe it was wrong, I don't know but if you look carefully you might be able to see why I interperted it that way.
2. A Dragon by its nature is a magical creature, capable of reproducing with almost any creature. I didn't check with the DMG to see if it was compatible...OOPS!! (wont make that mistake again). But I was thinking of a character concept were a half dragon was gradually turning into a full dragon through a process similar to what your Dragon Disciple will go through.
It might be illegal in the rules but IN THE DMG IT CLEARLY SAYS; That all rules are subject to approval of the DM. All you need is the approval of God (DM) and anythings possible.
At least you guys accept that in a low magic / tech setting, scared people are going to cause problems for the PC.
Sorry about that mix up.

You never cast alter or disguise self? What kind of arcane person who is terrorized were you?
Disguise self would hide all traces of you actually being a DD.
Sure, I guess you might be a wizard with prohibiting it, but other wise use a wand if you can't learn it.
(Wands don't require knowing spell, only spell list appropraite aka Wiz/Sorc list for you)
