Okay, I just wanted to get some feedback from my constituents. I normally play fighter type characters (Monk, Barbarian, Ranger, Fighter, etc....) Wellmy DM recently told me thatI should expand and play a spell caster, it doesn't matter what, just something that casts spells. Well I have been gaming for about 8 years, and have found that I really don't game well with spellcasters. I am too much of a run and and hack 'n Slash kind of guy. But anyway. Do any of you have some suggestions of spellcasters that aren't terribly involved (i.e. not a lot do to for spell selection/preparation) Since I don't normally play spellcasters I don't know much about different prestige classes and such. So if you could help me out I would really appreciate it.
BTW, I will be starting out at level one and I can be basically any race there is.

Well if you're used to hack n slash it shouldnt be too hard to convert that to point n blast. Go with the warmage. It does for evocation spells what a fighter does for melee combat. Spontaneous casting, all spells on the list are known from the beginning and you get to wear armor.

Might i suggest the Duskblade from PHB2?

Tactically, the warlock is similar in some ways to a fighter: you have a weapon (your EB,) and you use it. You dont have to worry about how often per day or any of that. Like a fighter, you keep on going and going.

Duskblade is ok if you want to get used to being a caster, at least a part-time one. However, it uses spells mainly to buff, and not actually fight. Clerics and druids can also do that, as well as unleash the serious magic for pure damage later on, but imo you should stick to spontaneous casters at first. A warmage or beguiler could be a simple way to get introduced to serious casting, and you could try sorcerer/favored soul if you can get some help on spell choices. BTW, if you go with sorcerers, try to persuade your DM to up the class a bit: most fixes include bonus heritage/metamagic feats a la wizards, and I would recommend asking for a "spells-known bloodline". These are in Dragon 318 and iirc you can find them in Crystalkeep: basically you get 1 more spell known (fixed) at each spell level, but you can't learn/activate spells of 1 subschool.

While it has been suggested already, I'd like to support Warlock (for you), as well.

DM's requirements:
- spell-caster

Your concerns:
- spell accounting
- fragility

Your strengths:
- tactics

Warlock:
- small number of spells
- at will spells (i.e. no spell preparation)
- spell-like primary attack
- elemental resistances
- no armor restrictions (although limited proficiency)

You'll be introduced slowly to spells; maybe even too slowly after you get the hang of things. You'll have a strong non-spell fallback, but it'll still be spell-like, so you'll still have the "feel" of a spell-caster. You'll also be somewhat hardy and aren't limited by armor restrictions, so you can be the first heavily-armored warlock if you want.

Two cents spent,

I guess that's right, I forgot about the warlock. Well, I always considered them, dread necros, beguilers and warmages something like sorcerer variants anyway :P Speaking of which, Battle Sorcerer (UA or the SRD) could also be a decent choice: you will know less spells and have fewer slots than the sorcerer (although more than a generalist wizard, mind you), but you will be much tougher and hardier.

I am looking into the Warlock, sound like it might work. I will let you know how it turns out.
