A question or two about Sorcerer's (or wizzies I spose!) [Archive] - Wizards Community

The PHB says under the familiar paragraph of the sorcerer section (pg54):
"A sorcerer can obtain a familiar. Doing so takes 24 hours and uses up magical materials that cost 100gp."

Now my questions are: Is summoning a familiar a spell, a supernatural ability, or maybe an extraordinary class ability, or something different?

The 100gp in magical materials; are those "spell components"?

I know these are kinda nit-picky questions, but I was curious how it all falls into the rules, to resolve an arguement .... with ... myself. :)

Thx a bunch

Please keep in mind that I don't really know what I'm talking about.

It doesn't matter. It can't be dispelled or anything no matter what type it is. The only thing that can affect it is a spell from Masters of the Wild (IIRC) that temporarily makes the familiar a mundane animal, but it doesn't depend on what type of ability the familiar is.

This whole question is really about you using some rule-raping to pull one over on your DM. Isn't it?

The material components is really about incense.. In 2e you had to burn 1000 gp worth of incense, now 3e cheapened it.

I'd rather call the summoning ability as a spell. No supernatural/spell-like abilities last long nor use any material components. It's kind of extra slot used only for this.

Actually you don't summon a familliar, you enchant an existing animal to be your familliar.
