A quick sorcerer question... [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-26-04, 09:09 AM I've been running my latest game for about a year now (currently 3.5), and one of my players, a drow fighter/ sorcerer has posed me a question: he remembers something about being able to cast a lower level spell, but to use up a higher level spell slot to do it. This sounds familiar to me, but I can't seem to find it in any of the books or in the FAQ's here. Does this look familiar to anyone else? I'd like to have an "official" answer before I decide to make a DM call-- it's bitten me once or twice before :rolleyes: . What he's trying to do is burn some of his higher level spells to get more Identifies in during one day, in case you were wondering. Any help would be most appreciated.

hmm, maybe this: from the spell section, under preparing Wizard's spells .. (I assume similar quote exists under Cleric and Druid ... )

Spell Slots: The various character class tables show how many spells of each level a character can cast per day. These openings for daily spells are called spell slots. A spellcaster always has the option to fill a higher-level spell slot with a lower-level spell. A spellcaster who lacks a high enough ability score to cast spells that would otherwise be his or her due still gets the slots but must fill them with spells of lower level.

02-26-04, 10:02 AM yeah, I think that's it-- is that from the PHB? I suppose, considering the term spell slots was used, sorcerers would be able to take advantage of this, as long as they had uncast higher level spell slots. Am I interpreting this right?

02-26-04, 10:15 PM Actually, it is on p. 170 PH 3.5, the last sentence of the first paragraph in section "Choosing a Spell". It says, "If you're a bard or sorcerer, you can select any spell you know, provided you are capable of casting spells of that level or higher."
