A Ranger Boy can Survive [Archive] - Wizards Community

08-16-04, 02:31 AM I have been getting annoyed by people complaining about even the greatly improved 3.5 Ranger as being too weak, and not useful to a party. I heartily disagree. In fact, I disagree so much, I tracked down a legendary figure in DnD history and legend.

Thats right! Hank Williams Jr. (Brd20). The only son of the greatest bard to ever live, Hank Williams, Jr continues his father's legend by spreading the word of truth.

Here is his ode to the Noble Ranger.

A Ranger Boy can Survive.

The Druids all say it's the end of time
And the Sea of Swords she's a goin' dry
The orcs are stronger and the spirits are gone
And you only get killed
If you're out too long
I live back in the woods, you see
A woman and the kids and the beasts and me
I got a rapier of speed and a bow +5
And a Ranger boy can survive
Ranger folk can survive

I can track a panther all day long
I can catch catfish from dusk till dawn
We make our own liquor and our own bows too
Ain't too many thing these ole boys can't do
We grow good ole Tomatoes and homeade wine
And a Ranger boy can survive
Ranger folk can survive

Cause you can't hide from us
As we all track along
Cause once we have you trail, well it don't take long
And we save trees and we save men
If you don't understand, we don't give a damn
We came from the eastern Thayan slave mines
And the Dwarven mountains, and the western skies
And we can skin a buck and run a trot line
And a Ranger boy can survive
Ranger folk can survive

I had a good friend in the City of Coin
He never called my by my name, just nature boy
My grandpa taught me how to live off the land
And his taught him to be a buisness man
He used to send me items from the Grand Line
And I'd send him some homemade wine
But he was killed by a Rogue with a poisoned knife
For 45 silver my friend lost his life
I'd love to spit some beechnut in that scum's eye
And run him through with my old bow +5
Cause a Ranger boy can survive
Ranger Folk can survive

Cause you can't hide from us
As we all track along
Cause once we have you trail, well it don't take long
And we save trees and we save men
If you don't understand, we don't give a damn
We're from northern Neverwinter and southern Lantan
We're seeded around protectin' our land
And we can skin a buck and run a trot line
And a Ranger boy can survive
Ranger folk can survive

Riviting isn't it? *sniff* But in all honesty, this epic relays how vital the Ranger is to our very world of Faerun. (Or Greyhawk, or Ebberon, etc...)

While properly built other classes (Dxx fighter) can fight better than a Ranger, or (druid) track just as well, the Ranger is a wonderful addition to the repertoir of people called to adventuring.

people, in general, imply that generally everything is either generally overpowered or too powerful and rarely balanced.
Personally, I don't know quite how people *could* think the current ranger is underpowered. The 3e ranger was horrifically underpowered. For instance, I could use the 3e ranger as an "NPC" version of the 3.5 ranger in exactly the same way that the warrior class is an "NPC" version of the fighter, barbarian, or paladin.
Most arguements I see about any class being over/underpowered are only looking at extreme cases (blah blah blah is overpowered because using obscure rules A, B, and C with PrCs D, E, and F, with feats G, H, and I, and race J, god K, skills L, M, N, and O, with specific campaign conditions of P, Q, R, and S result in a horribly broken build which is why my perfect houserules ban everything to do with Blah class,) and preferences (sorcerers don't have the versitility or strengths of the wizard class at all with weaknesses that the wizard doesn't express -- therefore, the sorcerer sucks and needs to be powered up!)
And yet they wonder why I don't share their views and refute them with contrary evidence or opinion that has a different resulting grasp of things and different ideas.
... anyhow, I think people who say that the 3.5 ranger sucks is full of hooey.

But my rants that are likely in the wrong spot aside, that is one pretty good ode. (though I don't know who Hank Williams Jr. or Hank Williams Sr. are, to tell you the truth.)

While your words have merit, I believe that Hank was a true bard. William was a writer and a (Noble).

William wrote a few plays and poems, but Hank united millions, and still decades after his death, he has changed music forever.
