Hi, everyone. I am building a multiclassed wizard/druid for my BBEG and I want to know---would he have a familiar and an animal companion, or just one? Would it be up to me to pick which one I use? Thank you.

You would have a Familiar and an Animal Companion.

You can use both at th same time.

Just don't be confused by the fact they you may have both a companion and a familiar; They have to be two animals (et al). You can't say, take a hawk and pile all of the bonuses of a companion and the bonuses of a familiar into the same one creature.

If you have the Races of the Wild, there is a PrC called the Arcane Hierophant. Essentially it combines the wizard and druid classes(the spellcasting progressions) and it combines the Familiar/Animal companion into one super critter!

Theres also a variant in unearthed arcana that lets you trade your familiar in for animal companion. You treat it as having a druid level equal to half your wizard levels. So, you'd have an animal companion of your druids levels plus half your wizard leves.

This would work and you could take the Obtain Familar feat to reaquire your familar

I'll probably do this, because I would rather have one more-powerful-than-normal animal companion than two weaker-sauce pets (familiar and animal companion) who will probably get PWNitized.

Right now we are playing a gistalt (sp) game and one of the people with us is doing a wiz/druid and the DM who is running the game made a hybrid of the two.

A question for you all: I was planning on the BBEG being around level 10 or 11, and I want his animal companion to be a Fiendish Awakened Rabbit. I already have the stats for this thing, but what feats and extra stuff would I have to use to achieve this goal?

Could you please explain to me what he did? I would like to borrow his/her work.

Ok so i just got off the phone with him and what he said was that since there were a low number of people in the game (3 pc) he just added the stats together and made the creature a little stronger, but it had a little mind of its own and he couldn't always controll it untill the wiz/druid met a requirement. then he could totally controll it.

If your going to do it around level 10-11, then use the Arcane Hierophant PrC from the Race's of the Wild book the above poster mentioned. If I recall correctly, you can get into it with 3 Wizard/3 Druid. or right about there... so you should be able to have your NPC have 4-5 levels of Arcane Hierophant as well. Do this and the PrC GIVES you mechanics for combining the Wizards Familiar and the Druids Animal Companion into one.

Sense your going both Wizard and Druid, take Arcane Heirohpant (RotW).
You get Duel Spell Progression, Your Animal Companion and Familiar Combine (sort of speak), your wild shape still progresses, and you get to shoot spells out of trees and plants.

BTW if you do this, don't get rid of your Familiar levels, the extra AC, the INT bonus, the ability to deliver touch spells, and the other stuff can be invaluable for your Companion Familiar.

Can someone post all the information for Arcane Heirophant or link me to it? I don't own RotW.

another thing i would like to say is that it was a suto dragon. it tied into the storyline really well. Its a epic storyline, lots of roll playing with just enough battles to keep the party fighter/pala happy. But as for the dragon, It was strong, for a companion, but he had to earn it actually use its full strength.

You can't do that. Once you Awaken an animal, it is no longer suitable as an animal companion. It may still choose to hang out with the druid, but it would no longer be an animal companion and would loose all of the abilities that granted.

From the SRD:
Awaken
Transmutation
Level: Drd 5
Components: V, S, DF, XP
Casting Time: 24 hours
Range: Touch
Target: Animal or tree touched
Duration: Instantaneous
Saving Throw: Will negates
Spell Resistance: Yes
You awaken a tree or animal to humanlike sentience. To succeed, you must make a Will save (DC 10 + the animal’s current HD, or the HD the tree will have once awakened).
The awakened animal or tree is friendly toward you. You have no special empathy or connection with a creature you awaken, although it serves you in specific tasks or endeavors if you communicate your desires to it.
An awakened tree has characteristics as if it were an animated object, except that it gains the plant type and its Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma scores are each 3d6. An awakened plant gains the ability to move its limbs, roots, vines, creepers, and so forth, and it has senses similar to a human’s.
An awakened animal gets 3d6 Intelligence, +1d3 Charisma, and +2 HD. Its type becomes magical beast (augmented animal). An awakened animal can’t serve as an animal companion, familiar, or special mount.
An awakened tree or animal can speak one language that you know, plus one additional language that you know per point of Intelligence bonus (if any).
XP Cost: 250 XP.

What!? Blastphemy!

Wizard 1/Druid 5/Mystic Theurge 4/Arcane Hierophant 10 is the way to go about this. All you need is Precocious Apprentice and Focused Specialist and you are in.

Dammit. Hmmm... Would this be a case where I could bend the rules a bit? Maybe the animal owes its life to the druid or something, and the druid used awaken on the rabbit so it would be more helpful or something.

Remember, I want this BBEG to be around level 10 or 11, not level 20. Thy optimization art worthless!

Surprisingly, no. The BAB requirement is +4, so you need an extra Wizard or Druid level.

At that level, it would be Wiz 1/Druid 5/Mystic Theurge 2/Arcane Hierophant 2(3). Still effective, and he would be able to flee the scene with ease in order to survive.

Now, does anyone know what happens if the Animal Companion/Familiar dies or is dismissed? Same as the standard Familiar, or are you able to summon a new one in 24 hours?

Or you could take 2 levels of Mystic Theurge if you want to balance your spellcasting.

Uh... yeah.

Some of us, many of us in fact, still consider the Percocious Apprentice as a way to get into PrC's early NOT acceptable. In fact, you and I have debated this before, so I'm fairly sure that you know *I* am one of the people that thinks that using that feat for that purpass is pure cheese, and thats why I didn't suggest it.

THATS right... thats why I said 'or around there' I thought I recalled there was something beyond the 2nd level spells in both Arcane and Divine that was needed.

Which is why you are using Focused Specialist to do the qualifications, instead of relying on Precocious Apprentice alone. You are right, I have debated this topic quite a bit. And I have also seen two people on the CO boards who asked for help building a Mystic Theurge/Arcane Heirophant character take this build idea and the argument to their DMs, and were approved. It is a logical debate, and a logical DM would see it as being no different from Wiz 3/Druid 3/MT 4/AH10, which nets 9th level spells on both sides (the build I suggested only allowed 8th on the Wizard side, but gets Wild Shape progression to make up for it). The original idea was Wiz 1/Druid 3/MT 6/ AH 10, which nets 9/9 with more 9th level spells than either build, but loses out on Wild Shape.

This same trick is used for Soulcaster and Anima Mage, and is actually very accepted on the CO Boards as being a legal tactic. The fact that is a little bit cheesy is only a matter of opinion. An opinion that I do not share with those who do have it.

when a familiar dies or is dismissed, you suffer an xp loss (half on successful fort? save). and you technically can't get a new one for 'a year and a day' if it dies. when an animal companion dies/is dismissed, you suffer nothing, and can spend 24 hours praying to get a new one. not very fair, huh?

I know, but what happens when an Arcane Heirophant's Familiar+Animal Companion dies? Can you replace in 24 hours, or do you have to wait the full year?

Agree to disagree. I consider myself a logical DM, and I don't allow the trick to work and DO see a differance between the two. I know plenty of others, both in real life and on these very boards, that agree with me. I know plenty on these boards that agree with you, and only one in real life.

The debate rages on... and likely will contenue to do so. Differant strokes and all that. I Do, however, take aception to the inferance that if one does not agree with your opinion in this matter, one is NOT a logical DM.

But I honestly don't know, I'm guessing.
