Not sure if this is the right place to post this question, but here goes anyway...

I'm in the mood for some high seas action in my world...but after reading through the PH and the DMG, I still am relatively clueless as to how to make a pirate character. I've heard of a "swashbuckler" class out there, but I'm not familiar with it at all.

Any advice? How would I go about making some piratey goodness for my players to enjoy/hack/whatever you do with pirates?

Thanks for your input!

The Complete Adventurer and Complete Warrior are the books for you in this case. In Complete Warrior you'll find the Swashbuckler base class, a warrior whoc ocnentrates on finesse rather than brute strength. While some may argue it's not the most pirate central, I feel a few alterations, and its perfect.

As for Complete Adventurer, in this tome is a Prestige class, the Dread Pirate. With differing options to allow both a Blackbeard or a Jack Sparrow, this Prestige class could be just what the PC ordered for all your pirtate needs. and of course, Stormwrack helps out with many ideas for nautical themes, such as weponry and feats.

And on a side note, if you check these boards, you'll find a nifty Pirate homebrew base class in the making thats definitely worth checking out.

Pretty much anything can be a pirate, really. A 3 level dip into Swashbuckler and the rest Rogue (before PrC's) makes an excellent pirate, with the right feat choices. Check out Complete Scoundrel for a feat that improves this synergy.

I'd use any combination of Fighter, Rogue, and Expert, probably Barbarian for Vikings.

For a sea-campaign, I really recommend Stormwrack, it's one of the really usefull enviromental-books.
