| JohnnyWylde01-20-08, 06:24 PM | Hi guys... Yesterday i entered in a adventure with some friends, and it was my first time playing D&D. I just love it. My char is 20lvl Arcane Archer (1 DUsk Blade/ 9 Ranger/ 10 ARcane Archer). I Was wndering if u guys have some advices to me like: what class or prestige class goes next, nice feats and itens. My feats is: Point Blank SHot, Weapon FOcus, Rapid SHot, Manyshoy, Improved Precise SHot, Precise SHot. I am Brazilian, so i hope you guys can understand my english!!! Thanks for the help!! See ya. |
| StevenO01-20-08, 06:43 PM | ARCANE ARCHER 11 - Hey, you have taken AA all the way to 20th level and maxed out the class so you had better take advantage of getting a "free" epic weapon. Not many character can pick up a piece of equipment they used at first level and expect to get through DR/epic which requires a +6 weapon to accomplish but which happens to be the enchantment level an AA 11 uses. I guess my biggest problem is the other ten non-AA classes. Unless something different has been done with favored class you should be taking an XP penalty every level for your unbalanced base classes. I don't know why you want so many levels in ranger as I'd rather take a straight Duskblade into AA although I see Ranger9 finally gets Evasion. If taking both classes I'd have gone for a 4/4 split with two levels in another PrC finding evasion in the PrC if I wanted it that badly. |
| wizarddog01-20-08, 06:48 PM | Next logical choice for a archer heavy is: Order of the Bow Initiate (CW) for more damage with ranged precioon, Close quarter combat, etc. or a Darkwood Stalker (CW) (will need Dodge) for Stuff like sneak attack, Dark vision, Uncanny Dodge, Dodge Critical and death attack. FEATS: (CW) Improved Rapid Shot Improved Favored Enemy Ranged Disarm Ranged Pin Sharp Shooting (Gained in the Order of the Bow) |

Thanks friend, you know, i am a beginner, so the guys made the char to me... When i came home, i love hte game so much that i start searching information to my char, then i find this site... Maybe with this informations that i just get now, i would made my char a little different. |

| JohnnyWylde01-20-08, 07:23 PM | I found two feats in the Racel Of The WIld book that i think is good. Able Sniper and Woodland Archer. What do u think? |
| StevenO01-20-08, 07:24 PM | According to the Rules as Written (RAW for short) you may have as many classes as you can qualify for. I too like a few levels of Order of the Bow Initiate (OotBI) to go with archer builds. You will already be taking most of the feat requirement to get into AA which means you need to dedicate a few skills to getting into the OotBI. Once in I'm happy with four levels; Ranged Precision is OK when you can only get a single shot off but Close Combat Shot at 2nd level lets you use your bow without provoking and at 4th level you get Greater Weapon Focus which is normally only available to a Fighter 8+. |
| dman1123501-20-08, 07:44 PM | Yeah, first off: take this to CharOp. Second: only 4 levels max of OotBI. Ranged Precision is not worth it, but greater weapon focus might be. More levels of Arcane Archer would be very desireable, for that enhancement to the weapon. In fact, that's a better deal than OotBI. Now, you've gone this far, why not 2 more levels of ranger? Now, what is your bow currently? You can leave out the enhancement bonus from AA. |

My bow is a +5 Long Bow Contructo Bane/ Brilliant Energy Where do you think i would go in my next five lvls? |

| dman1123501-21-08, 04:10 PM | You know that enhancement bonuses don't stack, right? So drop your bow to a +1 bow and then add on special abilities from there, the enhancement bonus will be replaced by your Arcane Archer one. My suggestion is a +1 collision, transmuting, splitting, vampiric, and either warning or arcane might. These are in the Magic Item Compendium, with the exception of splitting, which is in Champions of Valor, I believe. For your next five levels, either three AA and two ranger (for the bonus feat), five AA, or one AA and 4 duskblade or any +1 CL prestige class. If you up the amount of arcane spells you have, do arcane might on your bow, and if you don't, do warning. |

| dman1123501-21-08, 05:05 PM | It's how some PrCs advance spell casting, the +1 level of existing class. |
| JohnnyWylde01-22-08, 12:59 PM | It's how some PrCs advance spell casting, the +1 level of existing class. auuhahauhahauhuauah, sorry, but what is "PrCs"? Maybe Prestige Class? |
| Zardnaar01-22-08, 01:40 PM | I would stay pure Arcane Archer to get the most epic feats and your class ability to enhance your arrows is actually quite good in the epic levels (as far as none spellcasters go). |
| dman1123501-22-08, 02:15 PM | auuhahauhahauhuauah, sorry, but what is "PrCs"? Maybe Prestige Class? Bingo, you got it. There's a list of commonly used abbreviations floating around here somewhere, I'll see if I can find it. Wow, that took less time than I thought. Here. | JohnnyWylde01-25-08, 01:48 PM | In what book i can find some special arrows to look the details and buy in my adventure? |
| dman1123501-25-08, 02:09 PM | What do you want? If I were you, I'd buy a Quiver of Plenty for infinite arrows. It's in the Dragon Compendium. If you want special arrows, buy a Quiver of Ehlonna (DMG) as well. |
| JohnnyWylde01-25-08, 02:17 PM | I looked the quiver of ehlonna, but i didnīt find what specific arrows it contains. |
| dman1123501-25-08, 03:18 PM | It doesn't come with arrows, it just holds 60 arrows. I need to know what you want in an arrow for more help. But you'd probably be fine with just a Quiver of Plenty, Hank's Bow (http://www.wizards.com/default.asp?x=dnd/ask/20061227a), or a Quiver of Araniel (http://ww2.wizards.com/Books/Wizards/?doc=fr_lonedrowstats). Combine these with transmuting (MiC) on your bow and you're set. |
| JohnnyWylde01-25-08, 06:18 PM | Hey dman, very thanks for all the help you are giving. So you are saying to me get all these itens( QUiver of Plenty, Quiver of Araniel, Hunterīs Bow and My Bow) and transmute them in just one item??? And this will be like a bow that replaces his arrows? Just to see if iīm getting your point... About the arrows, i just use normal ones, so anything a arrow can do besides giving damage is helpfully to me. Thanks again friend!!! |
| dman1123501-25-08, 06:34 PM | The transmuting weapon enhancement is in the Magic Item Compendium. It lets you overcome all damage reduction. You want one of the quivers and transmuting (so transmuting and quiver of araniel or transmuting and quiver of plenty: do this one as it's cheaper) and your bow, or Hank's Bow and put transmuting on it. Another option is putting the force enhancement on your bow instead of transmuting. It's from the MiC. The quiver of ehlonna is there to hold any specialty arrows you want, like an arrow specifically designed for construct killing or something. You'll want this in addition to one of the five options I mentioned above. It will let you hold 60 arrows that you'd need for special shots. For these specialty arrows, I'm not really sure what you'd need, you could look through Races of the Wild and the MiC for some. |
| solbergb01-25-08, 06:52 PM | Hi guys... You want to stay arcane archer at least one more level, to get the +6 arrows that penetrate epic DR. To be honest, you really can't beat just staying with epic levels of arcane archer. You get a decent amount of bonus feats, good skills and free enhancement boosts to your arrows that can't be duplicated by spells or without a hideous amount of cash. Instead you can focus on having bows with lots of fun enchantments on them that are still "pre-epic" and thus cheap (or if you go into epic pricing, you're not wasting a bunch of cash just on the enhancement bonus. Arcane archer has issues in a lower level campaign, where the main class power is simulated cheaply by the Greater Magic Weapon spell. Epic, it doesn't have those issues. Frankly, I think starting with a level 20 character as your first D&D experience is going to feel extremely complex. I hope that you have some experienced players in your group to keep things moving. The sheer amount of options characters have at those levels can be very intimidating. Here is a basic equipment set that is just slightly over the 760000gp weath by level and mostly sticks to PHB/SRD except for Vest of Resistance, which is just like a cloak only in vest slot. This will get you the basic stuff any level 20 character is supposed to be able to do (eg, fly, ignore effects that restrict movement) plus the expected attribute and AC enhancing items. If you have other sources, take something away and work the other things in, Reducing the plusses on the ring of protection or animated shield should produce plenty of cash for small enhancements or cheap items elsewhere. In a pinch, drop the dex or str book by 2 (but not further) or eliminate the constitution book. Remember that for archers, strength is as important as dexterity. The equipment choices reflect this. The armor class of 38 is nothing special at level 20, but it isn't horrible either. You'll get hit by the primary attacks but the later iteratives will miss and they won't be able to power attack for huge amounts. Your will save will likely be kind of weak, reflex and fort save pretty good. Try to get a mind blank cast on you every day. If you have an odd attribute, buy a manual/book +3 or +5 instead of +4. 36000 Head: Headband of Intellect+6 (for bonus duskblade spells) 2500 Eyes: Eyes of the Eagle (+5 to spot) 36000 Neck: Amulet of Health (con+6) 55000 Manual of Bodily Health (con+2 for total+8) 54000 Cloak: Wings of Flying 25000 Vest: Vest of Resistance+5 (CA or MIC) 25000 Bracers: Greater Bracers of Archery (+2 to hit, +1 damage with bow) 36000 Gloves: Gloves of Dexterity (Dex+6) 110000 Manual of Quickness of Action (dex+4 for total +10) 40000 Ring: Ring of Freedom of Movemeent 50000 Ring: Ring of Protection+5 36000 Belt: Belt of Strength (Str+6) 110000 Manual of Gainful Exercise (str+4 for total +10) 12000 Feet: Boots of Speed 1800 Quiver of Ehlonna 2000 Heward's Handy Haversack 22400 Celestial armor (+8 to AC with +8 dex bonus allowed) 49170 animated heavy shield +5 1201 20 adamantine arrows 6 60 cold iron arrows 123 60 silver arrows (if your GM allows Races of the Wild, you also want Serpentongue arrows (slashing) and blunt (nonlethal bludgeon) 1100 Composite Longbow adjusted to your strength. I'll assume for the purpose of pricing that your total strength is 30 That may be a little high or a little low, but probably pretty close. Some way of defeating DR/good is required at this level The SRD only has Holy, but the MIC has several inexpensive ways that will make room for other enchantments (force is good, as are others) This bow is "tuned" for living creatures. Elemental bane is to "counter" the DR10/- that elementals have at these levels 36000 +1 holy, merciful, elemental bane 1100 Second Composite Longbow adjusted to your strength. This is a backup weapon. This example is tuned to "nonliving things" as the first bow is tuned to "anything alive", but you can pick your poison This is tuned to stuff the first bow can't hurt (with Merciful on) 18000 +1 golembane, undead bane 760400 |
| JohnnyWylde01-25-08, 08:19 PM | WOW!!! Very Thanks guys!!! All of this itens are in the DMG? |
| solbergb01-25-08, 08:37 PM | Yes, everything on my list was in DMG except one item, the Vest of Resistance. If your GM doesn't like that item, get a cloak of resistance+5 and use the cash saved for something like a magic carpet or broom of flying (the celestial armor will let you fly once/day if you need better maneuverability) If you are allowed other sourcebooks you should look them over. The bows for example, are a little underpowered for an archer of your level - my instinct with arcane archers is to focus on the basics 1. high strength for raw damage 2. 10+ levels for enhancement bonus on any bow he uses 3. bows tuned to specific opponents, rather than one very expensive bow 4. beat the damage reduction 5. if you need more punch, consider spells or ammunition that can be used in all the bows. Also being an arcane archer, having a couple plain old masterwork +10 strength bows in your quiver for when some enemy is coming at you that likes to sunder bows is a good idea. You still do significant damage with those bows, and a simple "make whole" spell will fix any damage, while your expensive bows sit safe in your quiver of ehlonna's extradimensional space. As an example, if you have a wizard or warmage, have them cast flame arrow on your ammo. Saves a +1 for the bow and can be used in either bow. If they have energy substitution (acid) have them cast an acid version as well. Etc. Look over your duskblade spells. "See Invisible" for example is a big deal. If an archer can't see it, he can't shoot it. Some of these spells mean you didn't need certain equipment (eg, dimension hop means I don't have to figure out how to get you out of a forcecage with equipment). There are equipment items in sourcebooks that can make the bows stronger too, quivers that let you pull thingsl like fire arrows out, crystals that enhance the bow for a flat fee without adding "+1" to the overall enchantment etc. If your GM allows Heroes of Ruin, get a bow with the splitting enhancement (+2), no question. No other enhancement does as much for an archer, it literally doubles your damage. If he allows the Magic Item Compendium, a fiendslaying crystal on your merciful bow would free up "+2" for other enhancements, and that book has many good ones. (dessicate is another like merciful that works on anything living, force is a +2 that lets you shoot through atmospheric obstructions like wind wall and hit blinking/incorporeal enemies all the time, transmuting means you can beat any DR as long as the fight lasts long enough for you to shoot that kind of opponent two rounds in a row) |
| dman1123501-25-08, 10:48 PM | Here. (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/magicItems/wondrousItems.htm#wingsofFlying) Try this instead of other methods of flight. I like continuous (or at will) more than x/day. Other than that and the infinite arrows/ignore DR stuff I mentioned, I like solbergb's item selection. Only I prioritize dex a lot more (max it out, then con, then strength). I use item enhancements to deal more damage. I do put stuff into strength, just only a +6 item and maybe end up with 22. |
| Zardnaar01-26-08, 06:17 AM | I would have a primary bow weapon. Probably a +1 Bow of Holy/Shock/Flamic/Screaming/Acidic/Frost/Keen/evil outsider bane. Thats +10 and you can probably add another +2 worth of stuff onto it. At lvl 21 its firing +6 arrows that deal +5d6 damage of various elements, +7d6 to evil creatures and +9d6 per shot to evil outsiders. Have a variety of amuunition and bane arrows (undead, dragon, construct etc) for those enemies that may be resistent to elemental damage. Make your bow mighty and try to have at least 20 strength and 25-30 dexterity. If you have the magic item compedium add collision power on it for +5 damage. Each arrow will deal something like 1d8+16+ 5d6-9d6 damage minimum depending on your feat selection and various other things you can tech out your bow. Also take rapid shot feat and imroved rapid shot and boots of speed for haste as a free action- you'll have 6 attacks per round for alot of damage. The elemental damage should hurt humanoid type foes while the bane type stuff and holy stuff should take care of outsiders which have elemental resistance. Each 50 +1 bane arrows costs 8000gp which is pocket change at level 20. Probably go Arcane Archer Wiz 1/Fighter 9/ Arcane Archer 10 pre epic and just stay pure arcane archer in the epic levels. |
| dman1123501-26-08, 10:44 AM | Get rid of the +xd6 energy enhancements. They aren't worth it, especially at those levels where energy immuntiy and high resistance is commonplace. Sure it looks great, but a static +5 that gets multiplied on a crit is better, and that's just a +2. Also, ignoring DR for another +2 is better, since that DR could easily take off more damage than three of the energies. Splitting doubles your damage (essentially) for a +2. Vampiric heals you, and boodyfeeding gives you temp HP. A point of con with wounding is also better than two energies, especially at higher levels: two hits and it deals an extra their HD in HP, which is probably going to be 20-25 at level 20, where two hits with an energy is only 14 average. The only ones I used that are in the MiC are force, vampiric, and then splitting is in CoR. Everything else is DMG or XPH (so SRD). Yes, collision is SRD material. Also, Zardnaar, he already has his build. But you do need three more feats. Give me a sec to come up with some good ones. |
| JohnnyWylde01-26-08, 11:39 AM | Guys, again, thanks for the lessons!!! I will try to do the best with all these informations!!! |
| JohnnyWylde01-26-08, 11:55 AM | Solbergb... You sad that Celestial armor gives me +8 AC and +8 Dex, i looked in the DMG and i find this: Celestial Armor This bright silver or gold +3 chainmail is so fine and light that it can be worn under normal clothing without betraying its presence. It has a maximum Dexterity bonus of +8, an armor check penalty of -2, and an arcane spell failure chance of 15%. It is considered light armor, weighs 20 pounds, and it allows the wearer to use fly on command (as the spell) once per day. Faint transmutation [good]; CL 5th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, creator must be good, fly; Price 22,400 gp; Cost 12,550 gp + 1,004 XP. Plz explain, just to me understand, why it gives +8 AC, if it is a just +3 Armor. |
| dman1123501-26-08, 01:44 PM | Its armor bonus is +8: +5 for the chainmail, and +3 for the enhancement bonus. |
| JohnnyWylde01-26-08, 04:19 PM | But how i get this enhancement bonus?? ****, this game is too much complex. |
| Zardnaar01-26-08, 04:49 PM | If your dex is really high- 30+ you might want to get bracers of armor or have a friendly spellcaster cast epic mage armor on you or something. |
| StevenO01-26-08, 04:54 PM | While I agree about not needing all the +1d6 elemental enchantments a straight +5 on the bow doesn't do an epic (or even 10th level) AA any good. A beautiful thing about the AA is how easy it is to overcome DRs provided you have the right few enchantments on the bow. |
| Zardnaar01-26-08, 04:58 PM | The elemental enhancements are relativly cheap though and not to many things are immune to all of them. Use a holy bow thougyh and have a few bane arrows for arious annoying creatures like outsiders, uindead etc. |
| dman1123501-26-08, 05:10 PM | Uh, a collision weapon costs the same as one with flaming and frost. And wounding costs the same as flaming and frost. So the price is the same. I do agree about the bane arrows, though. Possibly a few holy and bane arrows. |
| Zardnaar01-26-08, 05:17 PM | +1 holy, collision, Flame/Frost/Caustic/Screaming/Shock bow with various bane arrows:P You could also add an augmentation crystal onto it. |
| dman1123501-26-08, 06:38 PM | Wounding also. And force: ignores DR. That's +6. Now add splitting for another +2, and then some +1 bonus. I like warning myself. Or psychokinetic if you want more damage. Or blessed. That one is fairly nice. Hunting is really nice for rangers. Revealing can be very useful as well, mostly used for the benefit of your party at epic, since you can take that one feat that ignores all miss=chance. Vampiric heals you, so it's also useful, at a +2. And it deals more damage. And then you add weapon augmentation crystals to it. Energy ones. Or the undead or construct ones. And bodyfeeding is also useful, but it's a +3. If you can't get splitting, take this one. |
| Neraagile01-26-08, 09:15 PM | But how i get this enhancement bonus?? ****, this game is too much complex. Okay, people slow down, the guy is green and non-english speaker to boot (no offence, as am I so I can understand your perdicament). Instead of discussing all these wounderful things he can get, give him reference, and explain. Thank you. In my oppinion Johnny (what race are you? Elf or Half-Elf?), I wouldn't use ranger (they get extra feats except for Endurance and Track? Isn't the rest just Wannabe feats that "Counts as Having"? But now that I think about it "Counts as Having" could work, maybe?) Maybe a 4 levels of Duskblade (to cast Spells in Medium Armor) and 2 levels of Fighter (for some "Real" Bonus feats) then getting the before named 4 levels of Master of the Bow Initiate, as to make you able to shoot people even in close Combat without to much hassle, and Lastly your 10 levels of Arcane Archer (so the build would be Duskblade - 4, Fighter - 2, Oder of the Bow Initiate - 4, Arcane Archer - 10) |
| StevenO01-26-08, 09:20 PM | Using Bane or Holy ARROWS is a TERRIBLE idea for an Arcane Archer. Maybe not always but remember that a proper AA's bow is +1 with special features and they use non-magical arrows to take advantage of the AA's Enhanced Arrow feature. To me all of an AA's arrows should be cold iron (which only doubles their cost) with a number of Silver and Adamantine Arrows for the times you need to overcome that DR. To me the best place to start with a Bow is generally going to be +1 Holy because in most campains the majority of your opponents will be evil and DR/good probably the most common alignment based DR. When your arrows can deal with DR/magic AND good AND a special material the AA should have little trouble getting through it. The only Magic Arrow that I'd consider (outside of very special ones like Slaying and others priced one at a time) would be Brilliant Energy. |
| dman1123501-26-08, 09:48 PM | See, I just don't worry about DR any more since I start with +1 force. Ignore DR. For the bane ones, it's just +2d6 for some special instances. Put fiercebane on them for some critical fun. But I do agree: not usually worth it. To me the ideal bow for you Johnny is this: +1 force*, collision, wounding, splitting**, and hunting*. Just this, no special arrows needed to overcome DR. This is actually my ideal bow, with the possibility of swapping hunting and splitting for bodyfeeding, or just splitting for vampiric* if you don't have CoR (like me). Blessed is also an option, as is revealing. * from the MiC ** from CoR. @neraagile: I like ranger for archers. Those spells are nice, especially Hunter's Mercy. I like this build for an arcane archer a lot, since AA doesn't advance spellcasting. I'm also not going to wear armor, so more duskblade levels are unnecessary. You aren't doing anything with them anyways, why have more? The only thing I'd change is two more levels of ranger, but that might not be a good idea, unless you're starting at level 22. |
| JohnnyWylde01-26-08, 10:40 PM | I am entirely elf. |
| JohnnyWylde02-01-08, 01:49 PM | Anyone can tell me a good and usefull EPIC FEAT??? I need to choose one. |
| JohnnyWylde02-01-08, 02:10 PM | In what book is the Improved Natural Atack Feat? |
| dman1123502-01-08, 02:14 PM | Uncanny Acuracy (http://www.d20srd.org/srd/epic/feats.htm#uncannyAccuracy) should be the fist one you take. After that, it's really up to you. Bane of Enemies is a good one for rangers, and so is Death of Enemies, but i'd say don't take Death of Enemies since your DC would be pitiful. Combat Archery might be a useful thing for you, but I'd just use the Arrow Mind spell. Distant Shot can be useful, but it's probably not worth it for you. Self Concealment is always useful. The other feat that you should take at least once is Fast Healing. If you plan on not being hit often, take more fast healings, if you plan on being hit often, take Damage Reduction. Now you also need some non-epic feats, and I'll get back to you on those. EDIT: INA is in the MM, or the SRD in my sig, under monster feats. You won't benefit from it though. |
