can a Male Drow or Half-Drow become a Ceric of Eilistaee?

By the 3.0/3.5 rules no. Houserule yes.

why not? I see no restriction? even the prestige class is open to half-elves?

Well, there are no cerics of Eilistraee in D&D, but as for clerics of Eilistraee, they may be of any race or gender.

A member of the Sword Dancer prestige class (specialty priest of Eilistraee) must be elf or half-elf and female.

Thus males and half-drow may be clerics of Eilistraee, but only a female half-elf (or half drow) or elf (or drow) could become a Sword Dancer.

Of course your DM could always rule away the gender restriction (which given Eilistraee's all-embracing dogma is kind of silly).

In Faerun (Forgotten Realms campaign world), where Elistraee is officially a goddess, it is specifically required that her clerics be female elves (or Drow).

This is stated under her description in the Faiths of Faerun.

you know...now that i think about the Ceric's of Eilistaee...i wonder how well a meting between a Ceric of Eilistaee and a Ceric of Corellon Larethian would go over?

Should go over fine as Eilistraee is Corellon's beloved daughter who shares very similar portfolios and alignment.

Also, it's cleric, ceric is a word related only to chemicals containing cerium. It could just be me, but I believe people tend to take you much more seriously when you spell the class of your character correctly.

Is it possible you are confusing Eilistraee with Lolth? In Faiths and Pantheons Lolth's entry mentions that her clerics must be female, but I can find no such text in regard to Eilistraee.

This is also true of the Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting book.

Therefore I stand by my post that males of any race may become clerics of Eilistraee, though only female elves and half-elves may be sword dancers.

Ithilorien . . . I could of sworn that I read it in 3rd ed FR under Elistraee also.

However, I might be mistaken . . . what I am SURE of is that both in 1st and 2nd ed. FR, Lolth could have male and female clerics (males being severely level restricted) and Elistraee could ONLY have female clerics.

Could the books have gotten them mixed up or even worse, reversed them for their misbegotten ideas of flavor ?

You're right, it is rather odd. I remember 2e enforcing the idea that only females could be clerics of Eilistraee, as well (drow of the underdark, was it?), and I also recall a male cleric of Lolth in the 2e Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting . . .

As I said, however, I can't seem to locate any mention of a gender requirement for Eilistraeen clerics in either the 3e FaP or FRCS, though it's possible I'm missing it somewhere. While the entries for Lolth do specify a female-only clergy.

Highly unlikely I think. In the first place, no matriarch would ever allow this situation to occur, and Lloth is unlikely to grant males such "favour". To give a male clerical powers is to put him on an equal standing as a female.

I do recall that male drow can become wizards, and with the exception of the Head of the Academy of Wizardry, none of them can rise above 10th level. However I may be wrong.

Can anyone verify?

Darren

Heh, good idea. Imagine a male Elven Bladesinger (of Corellon) in love with a female Drow Cleric of Eilistaee; you got your hacking and your healing covered. What an interesting liason...

Males don't have to be Clerics of Lolth. They will be welcomed at the Temple of Selvetarm, where they can achieve great prestige without constantly fighting an uphill battle.

Darranz, there are no level caps anymore. None. Wizards can rise above level 90 for all WotC cares. Even drow males. And they can become clerics. And paladins, even. By core.

It is painful to see the ancient notions still implanted in your mind by second edition: damn you, you damn dirty apes for making second edition!

You're not really making sense. Rather, you are making sense, but in a quite nonsensical way.

I don't remember seeing such a restriction either. Being a chaotic good deity, I doubt Eilistraee would oppress males as Lloth does.

heh its interesting to see how many people confuse lolth with her most "beloved daughter" ;) ;). Anyways Eli places no restrictions and the only reason sword dancers are female only is beacuse there supposed to be like the "anti-lolths" rather then part-drow freedome fighter part-male drow rights movment part-drow priest whatever. There orginization was specificly made to combat lolth and her minions...lolth has only females so eli decided just to have females be sword dancers beacuse

1) Most femals were orginally priestess under lolth so they know whats going on.

and

2) Eli wanted her (human) anti-female drow to be female drow just to be like "Fear the power of the light...your drow and my drow are the same gender and race and we beat the darkness outta you.

Ok maby thats a little bit simple but thats how it went :P.
