I've checked both the PHB and the SRD, and I couldn't come up with a definitive answer on what qualifies as a legal mount for the Paladin.

Both have examples, and say that usually it's a warhorse; they say that the mount is considered a Magical Beast for purposes regarding its type etc; but it's not explicit regarding its base type (unlike the Druid/Ranger companion, or the Wizard familiar).

What I'm wondering is, can a Magical Beast be a mount, or does it have to be an animal? Can a Paladin have, say, a Pegasus as a mount (if only for the fact that it can fly)?

Of course my question is about RAW, so no house rules ^_^

A paladin’s mount is treated as a magical beast, not an animal, for the purpose of all effects that depend on its type (though it retains an animal’s HD, base attack bonus, saves, skill points, and feats).

There you go.
And there are many ways by RAW to change mount.

The DMG page 204 has guidelines for alternate paladin mounts. A 7th level paladin could have a pegasus.

Nevermind, I've just found in the DMG the Unusual Mounts... And one of those listed is a Pegasus :)

EDIT: gah, I'm slow at replying too. Thanks anyway guys.
