About the Urban Druid's urban companion... [Archive] - Wizards Community

I know that casting Awaken on a druid's animal companion "severs" the connection between them, hence do not counting the new creature as an animal companion. I assume that it's because of the fact that the animal becomes a magical beast and therefore may not be an animal companion. I also assume that the same goes with druids who have vermin companions, which too become magical beasts.

But the urban druid can have constructs as urban companions, such as "permanently" animated objects (dispel magic will not render them inert) and automatons (from MMII). The spell Awaken Construct from Savage Species is said to grant humanlike sentience to a construct. So again I assume that awakening a construct using this spell is the same as awakening a plant using Awaken/Mass Awaken. (3d6 to Int, Wis and Cha).

If an urban druid uses a scroll of awaken construct (doesn't have that spell on its spell list) on its animated object urban companion, does it retain and keep gaining the benefits as an urban companion, since it keeps its construct type ? Or does it loses the qualities of an urban companion ?

I assume that an unusually intelligent construct can still count as an urban companion, but I'm not so sure about that.

Can you guys help me with this problem ?

To me, it's not because the creature's type changes. It's because the creature ceases to be an animal (object) companion, and becomes a (rather capable, compared to a Wizard's familiar) party member.

If you were to allow it, between the base hit dice the creature gets, the bonus HD for being an unrban companion and the bonus HD for being Awakened, it's likely to be tougher than the party's Fighter, and much tougher than the Druid. On top of that, there's a roughly even chance it'll now be smarter than its "master" (Druids aren't renowned for a high Int stat).
