Ok, I am about to play a monk in an upcomming game, and had a few questions in reguards to monk abilities and some feats for monks... Why do monks have the concentration skill?... As far as I can see, none of thier abilites are spell-like, so why concentration?... The feat Flying Kick doubles all unarmed damage from a charge... As I have seen in various sources (FAQ, etc.), you do not again double damage from a critical hit on this type of attack... I am I right to assume that the damage of a critical hit with this feat is x3 (doubled for the feat, and they upped to x3, not x4 for a critical), or am I wrong?... After looking at the tumble skill, I also looked into the total defense option... Is there an attack penalty applied to this action, or do you only loose your AoO for the round?... Just curious as to this because fighting defensivly is +2 AC, -4 attack...Any help would be great...

If you're using Complete Warrior, flying kick got errata'd to do an extra 1d12 on a charge.

That's a complete kick in the pants for monks. Another thing they used to be good at, gone.

Well if you are on Total Defense, you aren't attacking at all, so there does not need to be a penalty to your attack roll, since you cannot (And are not) making any attacks.

You can still take AoOs, tho'.

1) Concentration is not just for spells anymore. Granted the monk isn't likely to be doing much that would necessitate the occasional concentration check, he still could. Maybe he had lvls in rogue before and has some good ranks in open lock. Now he can do it in combat better (possibly not provoking an AoO). I guess they just decided monks should be good at concentrating.

2) Whatever Lago said about the errata. But if it did do double damage on a charge, you'd be correct.

3) You don't make attacks when you do total defense. You can't even make AoOs in 3.5. In the event that you are required to make an attack roll (ie: someone tries to disarm you), you take no penalty either though. That is the downside to using lots of fighting defensively/expertise. You are easier to disarm.

So, if I was under total defense and had the Defensive Throw feat, I could still make the free trip attempt?...

Wow, that's not right... Sure, monks are good at it, but why reduce that... Also, this feat seems to be more of a benefit to small creatures than medium or larger... A flat 1d12 reguarless of size is not right at all... Even if I pick up that book, I will go with the old rule, not the new... Not every "fix" by wizards flys in my book...

Amen! Monk's are my fave class! I love the 3.5 Monk! Much more tight and well-done feel to it.

NeonSamurai has a site "The MinMax Vault". They have a Monk section that talks about a lot of their abilities, and stategies for implimenting them.

The Flying Kick Monk is my fave one. Charge + Flying Kick + Sandals of the Tiger = X4 damage. Get mantis leap, and do it a lot in a round!

I was refering to the "fixxing" of the Flying Kick feat in the Complete Warrior... As for doing insane amounts of damage, no, but only a +1d12, reguarless of level or size is not right... Seems to be more suited to low level and small monks over higher level and medium or greater sized monks...

As for the 3.5 monk, I like them too... I have only played one that was pre-built for a one-time game, and wanted to play one from the start... I like what they have done with them, and other classes (fighter, druid, paladin in particular)...

By the rules, how does one disarm an unarmmed attack?... No pun intended by the way... :)

If you have, or can get access to the Oriental Adventures book then you need to look through that. It has some great moves for the Monk.
