| blazed42012-26-06, 03:44 PM | This class is based off the main character from a story I made before coming into contact with DnD. I wanted to make it so that I might one day play that character. It resembled the soulknife so I used it as a base. Arcanist Blade Alignment: Any Hit Die: d8 Class Skills The Arcanist Blade’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Balance (Dex), Climb (Str), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Hide (Dex), Jump (Str), Knowledge (Arcane) (Int), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Wis), Profession (Wis), Spot (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), Tumble (Dex). Skill Points at 1st level: (4 + Int Modifier) x4. Weapon and Armor Proficiency: Arcanist Blade’s are proficient with all simple weapons, with their own Arcane Blade blades, and with light armor and shields (except tower shields). Arcane Blade (Su): As a move action, an arcanist Blade can create a semisolid blade composed of arcane energy distilled from his own body. The blade is identical in all ways (except visually) to a short sword of a size appropriate for its wielder. For instance, a Medium arcanist Blade materializes a Medium arcane blade that he can wield as a light weapon, and the blade deals 1d6 points of damage (crit 19–20/x2). Arcanist Blades who are smaller or larger than Medium create arcane blades identical to short swords appropriate for their size, with a corresponding change to the blade’s damage. The wielder of an arcane blade gains the usual benefits to his attack roll and damage roll from a high Strength bonus. The blade can be broken (it has hardness 10 and 10 hit points); however, an arcanist Blade can simply create another on his next move action. The moment he relinquishes his grip on his blade, it dissipates (unless he intends to throw it; see below). An arcane blade is considered a magic weapon for the purpose of overcoming damage reduction. An arcanist Blade can use feats such as Power Attack or Combat Expertise in conjunction with the arcane blade just as if it were a normal weapon. He can also choose arcane blade for feats requiring a specific weapon choice, such as Weapon Specialization. Powers or spells that upgrade weapons can be used on an arcane blade. An arcanist Blade’s arcane blade improves as the character gains higher levels. At 4th level and every four levels thereafter, the arcane blade gains a cumulative +1 enhancement bonus on attack rolls and damage rolls (+2 at 8th level, +3 at 12th level, +4 at 16th level, and +5 at 20th level). Even in places where magic effects do not normally function (such as within a Anti-magic field), an arcanist Blade can attempt to sustain his arcane blade by making a DC 20 Will save. On a successful save, the arcanist Blade maintains his arcane blade for a number of rounds equal to his class level before he needs to check again. On an unsuccessful attempt, the arcane blade vanishes. As a move action on his turn, the arcanist Blade can attempt a new Will save to rematerialize his arcane blade while he remains within the magic negating effect. An arcanist blade knows how to form only one type of arcane blade at 1st level. At each level the arcanist blade gains access to a new spell level (i.e. 3rd, 7th, 11th, 15th, and 19th) he learns to form a new type of arcane blade. When the arcanist blade forms his arcane blade he chooses which type of blade to form. If an arcane blade is already formed, he can use a swift action to change to a different type of blade. Spells: At 1st level, the arcanist blade gains the ability to cast arcane spells. The spell list is depended on the arcane blade he has in hand. Spells cast from the arcanist blade’s blade lists suffer no arcane spell failure while he casts such spells in light armor. An arcanist blade doesn’t prepare his spells ahead of time; he simply knows and can cast the spells his blade gives him while the blade is in hand. If the blade is by some means not in hand (see Blade Throw below) he cannot cast any spells until he creates a new blade. To cast a spell, an arcanist blade must have a Charisma score equal to at least 10 + the spell’s level (Cha 11 for 1st-level spells, Cha 12 for 2nd-level spells, and so on). The Difficulty Class to for a saving throw against an acanist blade’s spell is 10 + the spell’s level + the arcanist blade’s Charisma modifier. If an arcanist blade chooses to use metamagic feats to enhance his spells, he does so the same way a sorcerer does (PHB page 88) Weapon Focus (Arcane Blade):An arcanist blade gains Weapon Focus (arcane blade) as a bonus feat. Blade Throw (Ex): An arcanist blade of 2nd level or higher can throw his arcane blade as a ranged weapon with a range increment of 30 feet. Whether or not the attack hits, a thrown arcane blade then dissipates. Free Draw (Su): At 5th level, an arcanist blade becomes able to form his arcane blade as a free action instead of a move action. He can make only one attempt to form the arcane blade per round, however. Shape Arcane Blade (Su): At 5th level, an arcanist blade gains the ability to change the form of his arcane blade. As a fullround action, he can change his mind blade to replicate a longsword (damage 1d8 for a Medium weapon wielded as a one-handed weapon) or a bastard sword (damage 1d10 for a Medium weapon). If an arcanist blade shapes his arcane blade into the form of a bastard sword and wields it two-handed, he adds 1-1/2 times his Strength bonus to his damage rolls, just like when using any other two-handed weapon. Alternatively, an arcanist blade can split his arcane blade into two identical short swords, suitable for fighting with a weapon in each hand. (The normal penalties for fighting with two weapons apply.) However, both arcane blades have an enhancement bonus 1 lower than the arcanist blade would otherwise create with a single arcane blade. When you form two arcane blades, they are of the same form. They provide the exact same spell list. Arcane Blade Enhancement (Su): At 6th level, an arcanist blade gains the ability to enhance his arcane blade. He can add any one of the weapon special abilities on the table below that has an enhancement bonus value of +1. At every four levels beyond 6th (10th, 14th, and 18th), the value of the enhancement an arcanist blade can add to his weapon improves to +2, +3, and +4, respectively. An arcanist blade can choose any combination of weapon special abilities that does not exceed the total allowed by the arcanist blade’s level. The weapon ability or abilities remain the same every time the arcanist blade forms his arcane blade (unless he decides to reassign its abilities; see below). The ability or abilities apply to any form the arcane blade takes, including the use of the shape arcane blade. An arcanist blade can reassign the ability or abilities he has added to his arcane blade. To do so, he must first spend 8 hours in concentration. After that period, the arcane blade forms with the new ability or abilities selected by the arcanist blade. Dash: At 6th level, an arcanist blade gains Dash as a bonus feat. Arcane Strike: At 9th level, an arcanist blade gains Arcane Strike as a bonus feat. Greater Weapon Focus (Arcane Blade): An arcanist blade gains Greater Weapon Focus (arcane blade) as a bonus feat. Whirlwind Attack: At 13th level, an arcanist blade gains whirlwind attack as a bonus feat. Rapid Blade Throw (Ex): At 17th level and higher, an arcanist blade can throw a number of arcane blades per round equal to the number of melee attacks he could make. | Ghenesh12-26-06, 05:34 PM | Sounds like a fun class to play, seems balanced but less flexible than a normal spellcaster because of the very limited spell list. Besides giving the character a spell list, does the Arcane Blade Form give another bonus? like per example: * Flame Blade deals 1d6 of fire damage when it hits. * Air Blade increase the critical threat range of weapon by 1. * Water Blade gives a +1 attack bonus. * Earth Blade gives a +2 bonus on damage rolls and change the type of damage to bludgeoning. * Chaos, Law, Evil and Good blades are considered to be of that alignment in order to overcome Damage Reduction. * Destruction Blade increase the critical multiplier of the weapon by 1. * Healing Blade gives you Fast Healing 2 for a number of turns per day equal to your Arcanist Blade level, you can turn this ability on and off as a free action. * Protection Blade gives you a +1 competence bonus to AC. * War Blade gives you Damage Reduction 1/- . |

I like this idea, but the weapons arn't supposed to have magic level abilities to start with. Doing so might cause balanace issues. As for seperating the blades a bit, I had a feat in mind to do that. Separate Blades Each arcane blade becomes a separate extension of you. Prerequisite: Arcane Blade Enhancement +1 or higher. Benefit: Upon taking this feat, your arcane blade’s special abilities are all erased. When you spend 8 hours in meditation to give your arcane blade special abilities, give a different set of abilities to each. Example: your War Blade might be a +1 Vicious Arcane Blade, while your Good Blade might be a +1 Keen Arcane Blade. When your Arcane Blade gains a higher enhancement bonus, you must spend 8 hours in meditation to apply the new ability you want. Normal: Each arcane blade has the same special abilities. Special: Certain weapons cant have certain abilities. Air blade cannot have corrosive, or acid burst. Earth blade cannot have shocking, or shocking burst. Water blade cannot have flaming, or flaming burst. Fire blade cannot have frost, or icy burst. Chaos blade cannot be axiomatic. Law blade cannot have anarchic. Good blade cannot have unholy. Evil blade cannot have holy. Destruction blade cannot have merciful or defender. Healing blade cannot have vicious or Mighty Cleave. Protection blade cannot have wounding. War blade cannot have spell storing or bane. |
