In the old first edition, the one class I really enjoyed was the old ranger. His use of arcane spells and overall feel I really enjoyed.

Most specifically the use of arcane spells rather then divine.

Using established rules, how would you adapt such a class to 3.5?

Well the 3.5 Ranger is already as close to the 1st ed. Ranger than any other Ranger version in between. It has the old d8 back and archery specialization through Combat Mastery (archery route).

The 1st ed. Ranger had up to 3rd level Druid spells and up to 2nd level Magic-User spells.

I would just use the 3.5 Ranger and alter his spell list to include some 1st and 2nd level arcane spells. Lose the Animal Companion to balanced it out.

Alternately, I'd simply multiclass if that was what I was after ... but that's just me. Ranger (whatever) Wizard3 or whathaveyou.

Adjust the ranger's spell list by throwing some wizard spells on it. It won't unbalance the ranger since spellcasting isn't the ranger's forte and by the time you actually get those spells the other arcanists have moved on to bigger and better things.

Agreed. Not that there's a whole lot of mechanical difference between arcane and divine spells anyway. Many of the spells added to the ranger's spell list in Complete Adventurer have more of an arcane than divine feel as it is...
