Hi all.
I'm adding class levels to some kobolds for an adventure. I know that PC class levels supplant the monster levels for saving throws, BAB, etc.
Do NPC levels do the same?
I want some of the kobold to be a little tougher, basically first level fighters. I want a couple to be weaker, and was planning on making them first or second level Warriors. Do NPC classes like Adept and Warrior function like PC classes do in this regard?
Thanks!

I'm fairly certain that you treat NPC class levels the same as class levels in all respects except that they're worth CR 1/2 instead of CR 1, like PC classes. Simply put, yeah, I think they superceade skills, BAB, etc.

The kobold in the 3.5 monster manual is a 1st level warrior, so he already has a class. To advance to 2nd level warrior, increase base attack bonus by 1 and increase fortitude save by 1, and give another 1d8 (I think!) hit points.

To give him another one, remove the warrior abilities and add on the abilities of the new class.

However, it might be easiest if you just treat kobold as a PC race and start from scratch as you would with a Human NPC.

The "Kobolds as characters" section at the end of the kobold entry gives you ability score adjustments and racial benefits. Then choose your class and add on class features.

I'd have kobold spell casters as sorcerers rather than adepts though.

If you look over the 3.5 kobald description really good you'll see this one line where it says that kobalds with npc class have a CR of their class level minus 3.

I guess that means a 4th level kobald adept with elite stats is a CR 2 creature which I guess makes sence as they can cast scorching ray at that level.

I wonder if though if that means they should get a negative CR adjustment for PC classes... maybe -1?

I think once you go below 1, then you do fractions.

Instead of -1, it would be 1/4th or 1/2.

But using PC classes would make them vaguely comparable to a standard PC. I remember something about that in the DMG with considering NPCs with PC class levels to be of a CR 2 lower than the class level. At least this is something I think is there.
