One of my players has been interested in playing the adept as a PC class - with a few changes, of course. Basically, the idea of playing some kind of self-taught "hedge" magician who has access to both divine and arcane spells intrigues her. Does anyone of you have any suggestions how to change the adept to make it suitable ( power-wise) as a PC class? Or does anyone know any class alternatives - classes which represent the same?

I would have thought that the way to do this was through Mystic Theurge. the player's backstory can be all about hedge wizardry; the mechanics though would be done through a multiclass Src/cleric (with no named divinity) until MT.

the player could even call herself an "adept", though the character sheet would say otherwise.

I suggested the same but she isn't so eager about multiclassing ;)

You might want to talk to her about that. Multiclassing is hard-wired into current D&D. If she's worried about losing caster level for spells, you just need to take Practiced Spellcaster twice.

Otherwise, if she really wants to play an Adept, here are some suggestions:

* Do like Eberron: let her choose one cleric domain.
* Give her 'Summon Familiar' at 1st level instead of 2nd.
* Give her a medium base attack bonus (as a bard).
* Give her light armor proficiency and shields.
* Give 'Extra Spell' feat as a bonus feat every four levels (4th, 8th, etc.)

Look in Unearthed Arcana, there is a "basic" class called Spellcaster. It gets full spell progression, but gets to choose its spell list from Druid, Wizard, Sorc and Cleric. That's all I can say, since I'm not sure if it's legal for me to say more then that =/

Actually the entire class is OGL and can be found here:

Fudge it. If you're starting at a level higher than 3, give her character an extra level for every 4 levels everyone else goes up (or 25% more xp). If you're starting at first level, make some of the Eberron changes noted above, or just improve her character in some other way. Remember, you can do what you want, you're the DM! (within reason)

What do you think of the following:
Base Attack like cleric
D6 Hit Dice
Spell progression like cleric except for one thing: per level, the adept must choose 10 spells, 5 from the arcane(wiz/sorc) and 5 from the divine(druid or cleric) list. These are the spells she knows and due to a lack of formal training she cannot learn any new ones.

Any opinions? What about certain bonus feats?

Do the Humpty :bump:

I like the adept as a PC.
You might allow spontaneous casting from prepared spells.
That and d6 HP would make me happy.

I myself am not a fan of multi-classing.

My suggestion is to make the Adept NPC class into a PC class by extending the spellcasting to 9th levels spells and creating an appropriate spell-list extension for the 6th - 9th level spells.

Use the spell-list provided as an example and work with your player.

And give the Summon Familiar ability at 1st level.

Holy crap, the Spellcaster class pwnnnned the Sorcerer.

Full casting like sorcerer (6 spells per level), can choose from Druid/Cleric/Wizard/Sorcerer spell-list AND it gets bonus feats every 5 levels. You also get the opportunity to use Int for spontaneous casting instead of Cha.

I think all the Sorcerer-whiners just got exactly what they wanted! Namely a Sorcerer with a HUGE spell-list, better main stat, FEATS etcetcetc...

Nice one!

That class is meant to be used INSTEAD of ALL OTHER caster classes, not alongside.

Maybe that was sarcasm?

I like the Spellcaster: Why do you have to use Wisdom for DC and Highest level cast? Favored Soul can use both Charisma and Wisdom...

Archivist: seems like Wizard-like Cleric (lose knowledge of all divine spells, inst4ead must learh them like a Wizard) and lose heavy armor, turning, and domains, but bonus stuff to make up for it.
