| The_Mad_Linguist01-02-08, 04:44 PM | So, I decided to tune up the adept into a PC class. I don't *think* I've gone overboard with this (at least, compared to the archivist or CoDzilla), but I think this is a little too powerful at low levels. I like the holy knight archetype, but I don't like the horse and baggage the paladin brings to the table. Vindicator (Not to be confused with the Ruby Knight Gemstone Collection Society prestige class) (On second thought, Arbiter or Magister seem like better names) BAB: Full Will Save: Bad Fort Save: Good Reflex Save: Good Hit dice: d8 Class Skills: The vindicator’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (all skills taken individually) (Int), Listen(Wis), Profession (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), Spot(Wis), and Survival (Wis). Skill Points at 1st Level: (4 + Int modifier) ×4. Skill Points at Each Additional Level: 4 + Int modifier. Class Features All of the following are class features of the indicator class. Weapon and Armor Proficiency A vindicator is proficient with all simple and martial weapons, light armor, medium armor, and shields (except tower shields). Spells: A vindicator casts divine spells which are drawn from the adept spell list, along with the ones they learned through Greater Insight. Like a sorcerer, a vindicator casts spontaneously. To prepare or cast a spell, an vindicator must have a Wisdom score equal to at least 10 + the spell level. The Difficulty Class for a saving throw against an vindicator’s spell is 10 + twice the spell level + the vindicator’s Wisdom modifier. Spell-level recovery mechanism: Half an hour of meditation and prayer. Like other spellcasters, a vindicator can cast only a certain number of spells of each spell level per day. The base daily spell allotment is cribbed from Table: The Adept. In addition, he receives bonus spells per day if he has a high Wisdom score. When Table: The Adept indicates that the vindicator gets 0 spells per day of a given spell level, he gains only the bonus spells she would be entitled to based on his Wisdom score for that spell level. Each vindicator has a particular holy symbol (as a divine focus) depending on the vindicator's magical tradition. Advanced Insight: At 2nd level, and every third level thereafter (2,5,8,11,14,17,20), you can add a new spell to your list of vindicator spells known, representing the different insights a vindicator can have into the source of their power. The spell must be a spell of a level no higher than that of the highest-level vindicator spell you already know. The spell can be from any divine class's spell list (but not from domain lists). Once a new spell is selected, it is forever added to your spell list and can be cast just like any other spell on your list. Spell Synergy: The vindicator's spell list may act as one other spell list the vindicator has learned spells from for the purpose of Prestige class qualification. Note that even though a spell may appear on the spell list of multiple classes, only the spell list it was taken from qualifies. For example, a Vindicator who learned Hold Person from the cleric list would not be able to count their spell list as a bard spell list. The Adept's spell list is recreated below: 0 Level create water, cure minor wounds, detect magic, ghost sound, guidance, light, mending, purify food and drink, read magic, touch of fatigue. 1st Level bless, burning hands, cause fear, command, comprehend languages, cure light wounds, detect chaos, detect evil, detect good, detect law, endure elements, obscuring mist, protection from chaos, protection from evil, protection from good, protection from law, sleep. 2nd Level aid, animal trance, bear’s endurance, bull’s strength, cat’s grace, cure moderate wounds, darkness, delay poison, invisibility, mirror image, resist energy, scorching ray, see invisibility, web. 3rd Level animate dead, bestow curse, contagion, continual flame, cure serious wounds, daylight, deeper darkness, lightning bolt, neutralize poison, remove curse, remove disease, tongues. 4th Level cure critical wounds, minor creation, polymorph, restoration, stoneskin, wall of fire. 5th Level baleful polymorph, break enchantment, commune, heal, major creation, raise dead, true seeing, wall of stone. Adept/Vindicator Spells per Day Level 0th 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 1st 3 1 — — — — 2nd 3 1 — — — — 3rd 3 2 — — — — 4th 3 2 0 — — — 5th 3 2 1 — — — 6th 3 2 1 — — — 7th 3 3 2 — — — 8th 3 3 2 0 — — 9th 3 3 2 1 — — 10th 3 3 2 1 — — 11th 3 3 3 2 — — 12th 3 3 3 2 0 — 13th 3 3 3 2 1 — 14th 3 3 3 2 1 — 15th 3 3 3 3 2 — 16th 3 3 3 3 2 0 17th 3 3 3 3 2 1 18th 3 3 3 3 2 1 19th 3 3 3 3 3 2 20th 3 3 3 3 3 2 This doesn't come close to beating out the cleric, since you only get five levels of spells, but spontaneous casting and the more flexible spell list prevent the spells from being too useless (a better spell list than even the archivist, since they don't have to be made into scrolls). The tweaked DC increases from spell level should prevent it from being too difficult to get spells to hit. So, Please Examine And Criticize Harshly. |
| The_Mad_Linguist01-18-08, 05:42 PM | Adjusted BAB to be full to compete at higher levels. My current thoughts on balance against the core classes are as follows: Level 1-3: Overpowered, since it's basically a fighter with one fewer feat and spellcasting, although still less powerful than the druid. Not that that's saying much, but at least it isn't insanely powerful. Runescarred berserker opens up the possiblity of cure moderate wounds as a first level spell, which is decent if you want to be a walking bandaid. 4-10. Spellcasting falls behind sorcerer. Since this is a gishier class this is desireable. The class is still outcasting the ranger and paladin (who have just gained spellcasting), but won't be able to grab more than two or three of their really good spells. 11-15 Rangers and paladins are using 3rd level spells at this point, compared to fourth. Polymorph abuse is possible. A full caster is by this point far superior. 16-20 Fifth level spells, the highest you get. A bit of a letdown, even if you can grab some almost decent spells like antimagic field from other lists. You can finally cast heal and raise dead, which make you at least somewhat more useful. Full casters crunch you up like tissue paper, but with careful spell selection you should be able to defeat most non-casters. I'm considering increasing the frequency of advanced insight, since the spell list looks rather thin compared to cleric/druid, and only being able to choose seven spells over your entire career seems a little boring. |
