I have a question about spell progression when dealing with multiple prestige classes.

Situation: a character, Cleric 3/Sorceror 4/Mystic Theurge 5, decides to take a level in Thaumaturge. The description for the PrC says :

If a character had more than one spellcasting class before he became a thaumaturgist, he must decide to which class he adds each level of thaumaturgist for the purpose of determining spells per day.

Is it possible for the chosen class to be Mystic Theurge? If so, does this mean the character will continue to increase both their arcane and divine spell casting levels?

Thanks

No. A spellcasting class is one with a spell list of its own. Mystic theurge has no spell list, thus it is not a valid target for a prc which improves spellcasting lvs. :)

Mystic Theurge can only use it's:

If a character had more than one spellcasting class before he became a thaumaturgist, he must decide to which class he adds each level of thaumaturgist for the purpose of determining spells per day.

to a class that already has a spell progression. Mystic Theurge has no progression so it can not be the target of this ability.

Were I your DM I would rule NO.

Simply put, the mystic theurge has nothing but spell progression in two lists simultaniously. That is all it is for - no special abilities, no high hit dice, no good BAB or anything else, just that. To then gain that spell progression in addition to anything else will horribly unbalance the game. If it were allowed every multi-classed spell-caster would take one level of Mystic Theurge and then diverge into any of the other '+1 existing caster level' PrCs to get this spell progression plus other goodies.

Fair enough. My DM has asked me to design some high-level npcs for his campaign; just wanted to make sure I wan't being to clever for my own good.

Thanks for the help

the pc would choose between sorcere and cleric, he cannot choos mystic theurge because the mystic theurge itself doesnt cast spells only adds to the power of ones the pc could already cast. may i also say that multiclassing that much gives a hell of a lot of xp penalties i think. a pc should only be able to choose 1 prc cbecause that is wat makes ther prcs. they are special and the pc can noly pick one. i would highly reccomand against allowing such a multiclass to occur because that makes the prc like a normasl class by allowing you to be in more than 1 by multiclassing.
