I need advice on what forms are good for a mid lv(5-10) druid. I haven't used wild shape before and would like to know what animals everyone else has found useful.

Usefulness depends on the situation.

If you mean for combat: you won't be able to compete with your more combat-orientated party members until lvl8, when you get Large wildshape.
I think the Brown Bear is widely concidered the most handy animal for the first few levels thereafter.

In roleplaying situations all kinds of shapes can be useful: a monkey when you want to steal something quietly, a dog if you want to spy around in the big city, a bird when you want to travel long distances or have to cross rivers, crags or whatever...

Best combat forms for mid-level druids out of the top of my mind:
medium:
- black bear (MM) (and not brown, nono)
- crocodile (MM)
- fleshraker dinosaur (MM3)
- spindlespitter dinosaur (MM3)

large:
- fleshraker dinosaur, advanced to large size (MM3)
- polar or brown bear (MM) (which is of course large)
- dire ape (MM)
- dire wolf (MM)
- dire weasel (MM)

You can check the link in my sig, but it is for MMFs, so lots of non-druid forms are there, too, and some forms that are good for druids but not good enough for MMFs are omitted.

Yeah, Harzerkatze is basically the god of shapechanging. In fact, I've considered having my druid/master of many forms take him on as their patron deity.

I acknowledge his godliness, but I must be VERY mistaken if the Brown Bear is not a Large animal :)

   The MMF Bible was most enlightening. Is there a Druid's Bible around somewhere?

I acknowledge his godliness, but I must be VERY mistaken if the Brown Bear is not a Large animal :)Ack! My bright halo made me mistake the color. After all, by night all cats are gray, and in divine light all bears are white. So it's a black bear, of course.

The cats are quite good, for the pounce. So go leopard-tiger-dire tiger. Or take the bears for the good strength.

Was there a ruling on advanced animal forms for wildshape? I could have sworn we were limited to just "basic" forms.
