My brother and i are runing a solo eberon/planeshifting campaign, and i was wondering what you people think is a good class/race combo for a solo character.

Bard is....they're ok, but i dont really like them.

Druid, Paladin or Monk. Make it Gnome to get CON boost.
Biggest problem with solo characters is that there is no-one to help them out. Thus, each time they are reduced unconscious or unable to act, you need a deus ex machina to prvent him being killed. To minimize this need, first priority should be high saves (specially Fort and Will) and high HP. Evasion would also help.
Familiars or animal companions could try to help helpless solo Wizard, Sorc, Paladin, Druid or Ranger.

Or multiclass like hell. For example Druid, Cleric or Wizard would get nice boost to saves from bard-based "Elf friend" PrC Ruathar.

If I had to play a solo game with a single character of a single class, I would probably think about several (sorcerer, ranger, and bard, among others) and then go with a rogue. Not that they are my favorite class, but they are able to do several things well.
You have to account for traps, and of all the core classes, this is it. Some things will be locked, and breaking down the door isn't always an option, or viable. If you are good enough at hiding and sneaking, you can avoid a whole lot of fights that you'd just rather not have. The special abilities allow a bit of customization, and you can choose them according to your concept, or to your needs. Finally, UMD can (hopefully) be used to fill in all the rest.

You mentioned Eberron, so I know the artificer is available, and they can deal with traps and use magic devices with the best of them, but I think a rogue is still a stronger solo option over the long haul.

Well, Cleric is a good solo class if you play a martially-focused one. Also, I wouldn't rule out middle-high level Dragon Shamans because of Touch of Vitality. Druids good also be good, but the equipment restrictions really cut back on potential awesomeness. The only downside to a solo Cleric is the proficiency with simple weapons. I find the human in full plate with a mace at his side preaching Pelor to all who'll listen way too common and cliche. I play a Nezumi 10 lvl Cleric of Tamara 10 lvl Dracolyte who once blinded a Blackscale follower of Tiamat 6 times simultaneously for threatening villagers. That was satisfying. Then, his team of 2 other guys killed a Hellfire Wyrm (CR 26). Took 3 Disintegrates to get rid of the body, but we went up halfway to epic level. Then my Cerebremancer got eaten by a tree, and the Nezumi was broke. He's been resurrected, and I am happy again. And I have once again proven that I cannot stay on one topic for a civilized amount of time.

the best classes for solo campaigns are the most well-rounded classes: cleric, druid, bard, beguiler, paladin

I would suggest you talk to your DM about a way to grant needed aid, without constant Deus Ex Machina (AKA last minute outside help). Mercenaries are great, whether you control them or the DM they can still come in handy (better if you control them though, DM controlled mercs are generally benchwarmers in combat).

Another idea is something like those stones in Neverwinter Nights that transport you instantly to the temple of Tyr whenever you are reduced to less than 0 HP. Of course using them has some cost (up to DM - should be fairly penalizing, otherwise they are abusable). It provides a safe fallback in case the DM underestimates the challenge he is putting you up against.

Just some ideas :)

Fighter/Wizard/Eldritch Knight, Warblade or Swordsage/Wizard/Jade Phoenix Mage(Tome of Battle), most Martial/Caster builds, NECROMANCER, most Druid builds, most Stealth/Caster builds.

I'd personally go Necromancer :D, but only if you can use Libris Mortis.

Some eberron-only builds:
Shifter Ranger/Shifter PRC/Warshaper(Complete Warrior), Changling Monk/Warshaper, Rogue/Action Point PRC.

Warshaper is fun with eberron :D

If your dm doesn't let you multiclass so much, I would say Druid, Cleric or Monk. Especially Warforged Monk w/Battlefist & Improved Grapple :D.

The problem with martial solo cleric is that he needs several rounds to get his buff spells up, and there are no allies to protect him at that time.
This can be circumvented by persistent metamagic and some kind of contingency spells, but it is high level and expensive stuff.
Other trick is using invisibility (Trickery domain, I believe) to buff and summon at the start of the battle.

Paladin is nice with high saves, good HP and BAB and some healing. Problem with them is that playing one can severely restrict your roleplaying options.
