Will be playing a campaign starting off in the underdark then moving to the surface at later levels. Was just wondering if anyone had any ideas on what would work well.

A bunch of slaves banding together to escape from their captors and fleeing to the surface seems like a good idea, though many of the races of underdark come wuth LA, so I am bit leery of trying them out. The deep imaskari comes across as an excellent caster race, minotaurs/grimlocks could make good fighters. Apart from that, I am not too sure.

It really depends on what class you want.

Dwarves are excellent, good scores, darkvision. Maybe a dwarf wizard. Take levels in Rune Caster (the dwarf wizard class from races of stone) so you can cast spells in armor. Then mindbender and the feat from lords of madness named mindsight. Gives you effective blindsense 100ft. Super green.

Have not decided on anything in particular yet, completely open to suggestions. The one idea i was toying with was a chitine rogue/fighter/invisible blade.

All suggestions are welcome!

I've always found that LA 0 races ended up owning LA + races in the long run.

As such, this typically gets rid of the common Underdark races of Drow, Duergar, and Svirfneblin. An underdark campaign is typically one setting where I encourage Dark Elven characters, but if they'll be heading to the surface, you'll find the ECL rather troublesome.

Basically, anything with Darkvision and a LA 0 is a good bet. Orcs and Half-Orcs make great tanks, Goblins/Kobolds are fantastic Rogues, Dwarves make good clerics, and a wizard would probably not survive a life of slavery.

Having an Orcish Barbarian, Goblin Rogue, and Dwarven Cleric would make for an excellent RP interplay.

I assume goblins and kobolds have no LA and hopefully some bonuses on dexterity.

Ye ol' Kobold: (small) -4 Str, +2 Dex, -2 con, +1 Natural AC, +1 Size AC and attack (part of small traits), 60 ft darkvision, +2 Search, +2 Profession (Mining), +2 Craft (Traps), dazzled in light.

Doesn't offer a lot, but is fun to play :D My last kobold was a psion / rogue
