I really like the Magister Class from Arcana Evolved and my GM would allow me to play one, but I don't want to cause trouble with the other players who use the normal Spell-System. I thought that rebuilding the Class for core DnD would work better (the Magister has weaker Spells but is still too strong given to all the options he has with Heigthen Spells, Weaving, knowing every Spell, etc.).

So I would like to hear about your opinion on this Wizard/Sorcerer Combination:

The Sorcerer is the base for this Class (Spontainos Casting, no Bonus Feats, slower Spell-Progression,..) but with the following Changes:

Spellcasting Attribute: Int
Skills: ala Wizard
Spells per day: ala Sorcerer but with 2 less Spells per day per Rank (so more like a wizard)
Spells known: like Wizard, starts with all 0-level Spells, severall 1-level ones and 2 new Spells per Level can learn from Scrolls

Spellpreparaition:
now thats what sets this Class apart from Wizard and Sorcerer ...
He has as many Spells prepaired as a Sorcerer know at the level and can cast from this selection like a sorcer without canceling the Spells (he is just like a sorcer but with far less Spells per day) but he can change a preparaired Spells to any other he learned when he spends 15 Minutes.

Pro:
Spontainous Casting
Retain some Wizardlike flexibility

Negative:
Far less Spells per Day as a Sorcerer
His Wizardlike Flexibility works only when he has enough time
No Class features besides the Familiar
Slower Spell Progression like a Sorcerer

Example level 7 Character:
Spells per Day: 0:4 1:4 2:4 3:2
Spells prepaired: 0:7 1:5 2:3 3:2
Spells known: like a Wizard lvl 7 (obviously without access to lvl 4 Spells)

So thats it. What do you think about it? To strong, to weak or is it broken in some way?

Many Thanks in Advance & Have FUN!

Looks good to me. I like the Magister also and while not a full recreation it has the general feel atleast. If you wanted to make it even more like the Magister though i'd allow some spell weaving and maybe an aspect of power/mind over matter but dump the familiar. It's a "filler" class ability and replacing it with something usefull makes the class more balanced.

Has sorcerer special abilities w/o his penalties. Has the wizards special abilities w/o his penalties. The only way to achieve that in the core game would be to multi-class Wizard/Sorcerer. Compare it to that option to see if it is broken in coregame terms.

Remember that the Magister, as written in the AE (or AU) has the casting requirement that he *must* have his staff. A D&D sorcerer can get out of prison with a simple "Open/Close" cantrip, but the Magister is stuck if they took away his staff (IIRC).

(Also, IIRC, the Magister has d6 hp. However, you based this on the sorcerer as a sorc/wiz combo, so I see that you already lowered that to the d4 appropriate in D&D.)

Thanks for your fast answers!

I think I will drop this class for now until we play a one-shot and will play a Magister for this campaign where I simply try not to step on the toes of our Cleric and Artificer's Role. (Or will play a Sorcerer with a Feat that lets me trade Actionpoints for spontainous "remembering" a spell)

@Flamelover:
It's true that he is not a true recreation and lacks flavor, but this was only my first attempt where I cared only about the balance of core features. But you are right, if I would finish the class I should try to make it a bit more unique.

@Robert 22:
The reason that it does not share the weakness or lessen the weakness of the classes was the primary reason for doing this class. I love spontanous casting but my group needs the versatility of a wizard so I wanted to have both.

But I tried to compansate by taking the worst spellprogressions ... Gaining new Levels later like a sorcerer, having fewer spells per day than a wizard (no spezialisation and gaining new levels later (missing 1-2 spells per day)) and no Bonus Feats.

I don't think that this class would really be better than a strait sorcerer or wizard, but I think the time for changing spells should be longer ... more like 1 hour or so.

The main problem I see now is that he is a good metamagic user (like a sorcerer) AND a good Item Creator (like a wizard) .. but he have to choose wisely without bonus feats.

@Thelon:
I don't think that the staff is a big problem. If a magister loose it he have to double the casting time and his caster level is lowered by two, but he can still cast any spell he knows, on the other hand if a Sorcerer/Wizard looses his Spellpouch he have no chance of casting most of his spells at all.

By the way, I don't belive you can use Open/Close to unlook doors. "Knock" is used for this. Open/Close youst opens unlocked doors from a distance (good for avoiding traps).

Thanks & Have FUN!
