| Aigol05-21-05, 07:30 PM | Ok, Ok, I know it is a stupid idea but I really have no idea how to do it. I have never made a class before and I was just wondering if anyone out there who has watche Full Metal Alchemist could help me on this. The Alchemist I want to make is like Mustang or any other normal guy but eventually getting powers like Eds. Any help would be appreciated. I was planning on using the Cleric/Druid BAB. I would also give him the power to use spell like abilities if he used an array or summoning circle type thing and the spell was a transmutation spell that had a physical effect like rock to mud(or whatever it is called. If he used a creation type spell he would have to have materials that he turns into the object being created. I am also thinking about letting them use spells like fireball bt they need to make a spark etc. to do this they would need an inscribed Array on a piece of clothing(another ability) or they could use an Array tatto. each array would be good for one spell or effect and could be used unlimited times unless there is a material component. :weep: :( this will be my last thread on this topic :surrender :surrender :surrender :nonono: :nonono: |
| Direwolf14105-22-05, 06:48 PM | Heres my basic mechanic for the Alchemist: An Alchemist may alter 4 x Alchemist level of cubic ft. worth of material. Why cubic ft? Because solids liquids and gasses may use cubic ft. as a mesurement (not too sure about plasmas). An Alchemist must have an array touching him to start an Alchemy Reaction. Placing an array, if one is not readily availible, is a move-equivelent action that provokes an attack of opprotunity. Transmutation, another term for a reaction, is a standard action that provokes an attack of opprotunity. An alchemist may, as a full-round action that provokes an attack of opprotunity, place an array and cast an Alchemy Transmutation. This is in so that an alchemist that need to place an array does not take two Attacks of Opprotunity. Im still tooling with this idea, I want the class based on INT and be limited by a certain number of Alchemy uses per day. I was also thinking of implementing something similiar to the Warlock invocation levels in what he may alter with his alchemy. Like at lower levels he can only change something into a similar substance or reform objects, while at higher he can change a substance into a radically different one. I also am working on a Truth class ability that would give him Ed-like powers. Ill post more on it once I figure out the spoiler box as I dont want to ruin things for fans of the series. Let me know what you guys think and give me some suggestions on how to improve it. Thanks! |
| Aigol05-22-05, 10:01 PM | That seems like a really good idea. So using what you said I have an idea for Mustangs power. If you can make a spark (a free action) then you can use it to convert X cubic feet of air into flames and the effect would be similar to fireball but maybe not quite as strong. The could also have a king of Favored weapon which is inscribed with an Alchemey circle and ca be shifted into any item of similar size or weight and material with the same enhancement bonus. It would take a 24 hour alchemey process to make it your favored weapon. You can only have 1 favored weapon at any one time. :D |
| Direwolf14105-22-05, 11:23 PM | Im not quite understanding the favored weapon shifting thing, but I get the general gist of having a circle on the weapon. Could you give me an example of how the circle could be shifted? Your right on about the fireball idea, but just making a spark isnt so easy so I came up with a special material mentioned in the show, Spark Cloth. By rubbing it together one can create a spark. You could make gloves out of it like Roy did. Combat has always been a bit of an issue, its just that I cant think of many options beyond fireballs and spikes. Ive had trouble figuring out the math on how many reactions an alchemist can start per day. If you come up with anything could you let me know? |
| Aigol05-23-05, 12:18 AM | Hey, DireWolf, just in case you didn't get my private message the favored weapon can be turned into just about any item. (kind of like eds arm) transforming this favored weapon would not use up one of the daily Alchemy uses. I still have no idea how many uses per day but I may have some ideas for more kinds of combat alchemy. |
| slade_caizer05-23-05, 12:27 AM | I'm sorry if this isn't the place to ask, but there's something I've been wondering since I first watched Full Metal Alchemist. What is the difference between the (anime) Alchemist and the (D&D) Transmuter? I'm aware that in the anime they repeatedly state alchemy is a science and not magic, and if not for the way Ed and company use it I would agree. They need a magic circle as a focus/component, and in so far as I can tell they use nothing but their will to reshape/rebuild/reorganize matter. They even point out that you can't conjure (create from nothing or summon) things/people/spirits/etc. Seems like that world's forbidden schools are conjuration and necromancy. Can anyone offer some insight? |
| Aigol05-23-05, 12:30 AM | What is the transmuter I have never seen that class what book is it in. |
| slade_caizer05-23-05, 12:35 AM | What is the transmuter I have never seen that class what book is it in. It's in the Player's Handbook. It's a Wizard who chooses Transmutation as his/her school of specialization. If I were to guess, I think Ed would be something like a Fighter/Transmuter/EldritchKnight. That automail arm gives him a nice slam attack too. ^_^ |
| Aigol05-23-05, 12:40 AM | oh ok then the difference is that the transmuter casts transmutation spells while the anime alchemist uses a different circle for each thing and just convert material from one thing to another using the principles of science ie. you need a spark to make a burst of fire while a wizard type person just makes a burst of fire from thin air. :) |

He/she accelerates molecular motion through force of will until material (air-borne gas molecules for instance) combusts. Depending on the spell there may be a material component. In the anime they substitute the circle/array for spell components. Ironically, a Geometer (Complete Arcane) uses a similar technique with glyphs. As for changing one thing to another, I refer to spells like Flesh to Stone (and reverse) and Rock to Mud (and reverse). [BTW Stone to Flesh + Awaken = much cruelty to DM and NPCs] |
| Aigol05-23-05, 12:50 AM | Well yeah if you look at it that way then they are very similar but I guess I am just trying to find a different way to look at it :D |
| slade_caizer05-23-05, 12:51 AM | Well yeah if you look at it that way then they are very similar but I guess I am just trying to find a different way to look at it :D I don't blame you. I've been trying myself; I'm just failing. So I just continue to watch the show with glee and occasionally mock the "this is science" part of it. Either way it's all good. ^_^ |
| Aigol05-23-05, 12:54 AM | Well same to you since you are the second person total that I know of who has tried to make an FMA Alchemist you should brainstorm on this thread with me and direwolf because 3 heads are better than 2 (most of the time anyway) |
| Direwolf14105-23-05, 12:57 AM | Hey slade, those are actually very good questions. Sorry for the long post, let me know if this makes sense at all :P From a Roleplaying standpoint I think its silly not to mix magic into the equation when D&D is involved, so I chuck in magic and say that they are using a magic of a sort. I dont know how far you are in the series so I dont want to spoil things but if your done then you know what creates the transmutation, thats what I mean when Im talking about a magic of a sort. The biggest mistake I think with many anime to D&D translations is that people try to get it exactly as they see it. Thats good and all but anime is funky and characters tend to pull stuff out of their arses at the last minute, and that just doesnt work in D&D. I like to think that the character will use magic just not in a traditional Wizardy/Clericy kind of way. I also think that his knowledge of the composition of things can help him mold that magic, if they even know its magic or not. Game mechanics wise the big thing with Transmutation seems to be movement and temporary change. From looking at the Wizard/Sorcerer spell list, I only saw two spells in the whole list that even had the word Transmute in it. Rock to mud and mud to rock, while those are handy they can be situational like if your on sand. Now take that idea and make the rock to mud when you need it and turn the sand to glass when you need to. My idea with the alchemist is that he has vast versitility within his specialty, which is his brand of alchemy. I like the idea of a wall coming out of the ground to protect a villiage. Sure a transmuter can do this too but once its there. He couldnt take that same wall and turn it into a pile of steel to make horse shoes very easily. He could use a Polymorph any object spell but thats an 8th level spell, and far too powerful for simple horseshoes. I honestly just think that this gives massive versitility at the cost of extream specilization, plus its flavorful to boot! :D |
| Aigol05-23-05, 01:02 AM | You seem to make perfect sense direwolf. Did you see my post explaining the whole favored weapon thing. |

It could be an interesting PrC--assuming it hasn't been printed elsewhere already. It might be something like the Master Transmogrifist (Complete Arcane) but focusing on changing other things instead of self. Ooh the potential in that... NaughtyAlchemist: "I change the Warforged's composite plating into acid." DM: "...words don't exist to express the ways I hate you..." |
| Aigol05-23-05, 01:24 AM | Yeah that sounds good but I was hoping I could find a way to make an Alchemist a whole career path as a normal class not a PrC but whatever works works I guess. |
| HyDrAwYrM05-26-05, 04:27 AM | I have recently made a thread on this also. I think that we shoudl all put our heads together, and finally put this on paper as a class. I think it could be a starting class. The only thing that would keep it from being far to powerful would be to limit its uses each day. The DM will also have to know many things about science to allow the certain things that are being transmuted. Other than that the class is so versatile that it owuld be a blast to play. I have a BAB and saves made for them but thats about as far as i have gotten. I have them essentially like a bard. All the alchemists shown in the show have a very powerful will and are very good at dodging. They can also fight fairly well so the bard's BAB isnt terrible but also isnt like a fighter also. I think at 1st level they should be restricted totally to the use of a hand drawn circle. I would say at about 5th level they are accustomed to having it on their hands, armor, tattooed, on their weapon, or any other way people could think of. At 15th level let them transmute as Ed does in the show, without the need for any kind of circle. Lets get this class totally together because i really want to play it. Lets work together and get this made. Any feedback is much appreciated. Thanks HyDrAwYrM |
| simon_tage05-29-05, 01:18 PM | Again, you seem to want a transmuter that has the martial arts skills of a fighter or monk. I know the alchemists in the show have many more restrictions on them than a transmuter wizard would but I am not sure how to balance it out. I hate to ring the same bell I usually do but rather than make a new class with tons of potential for unbalanced game abilities why not try multiclassing or working towards a character "like" those on the show but not quite the same. A monk/sorceror that only took alteration spells would be close, or a fighter/wizard(transmuter). Just create a few lower level spells (players can with the DM's approval) to change small amounts of material into something else for a short suration (i.e. a gauntlet into a shortsword, or a bottle of wine into alchemists fire)? |
| Skylar62605-29-05, 01:31 PM | just... just stop watching when you think its starting to get a little strange... there is nothing good about the ending... just... just dont watch the ending... you will be so very angry... It was so cool until the ending. |

That's about the size of it. I pretty much think of Ed as the standard(?) gish build. Fighter1/Transmuter6/Spellsword3/EldritchKnight10. After that just get a caster who can graft an artificial limb or two. Maybe a variant of the half-golem template (MM2) is in order. Polymorph Any Object is essential. If you really want you could even take Improved Unarmed Strike and Improved Natural Attack (or something like that). At least that assumes you don't give it a slam attack in the first place; no need for IUS then. Al would probably be something like a Transmuter/GreenStarAdept. |
| Niveus Lynx05-29-05, 02:27 PM | I thought I'd try and make an Alchemist, so here it is (http://boards1.wizards.com/showthread.php?p=6302217#post6302217). |
| Aigol05-29-05, 02:53 PM | I still haven't gotten much feed back on the idea of a favored weapon kind of thing where as a move action not using a daily transmutation the can change 1 weapon the have chosen into another type of weapon of similar size or another object. for example change your sword(favored weapon) into a shield to protect youself but that is just one example. |
