My dm and i were planing a character for a new campaign, and we thought it might be cool to have a potion throwing alchemist character. Is there an actual alchemist class who brews damaging potions and the such? Or do i have to be a wizard or other mage class and take the brew potion feat?

I was hoping to create a character who could stand in the back and chuck potions like alchemist fire and the like. Thinks on this site - http://www.crystalkeep.com/d20/rules/DnD3.5Index-Equipment.pdf

Located on pages 30-35.

For a second there, I could've sworn you were going to ask for a Hagaren Renkinjutsushi alchemist. :D

Well, in 3.5 D&D you have to be a spellcaster to make potions. Although Craft-alchemy (http://www.systemreferencedocuments.org/35/sovelior_sage/skillsInt.html)can be taken by anyone thanks to the fact that craft is not an exclusive skill, alchemical substances can only be made by spellcasters.

So yes, you have to take at least some levels in a spellcasting class to make the potions yourself. That doesn't preclude buying them... but that would get expensive.

Since you mention chucking vials from the back row, you'll be a little safer, and as such, the poor hit points that arcanists usually get will impact you less... There's a PrC out of Magic of Eberron called Alchemical Savant... I think... it's five levels and has a couple of abilities that would work well on a potion throwing mage. There's a Faerun one as well that's nothing but potion making for an arcanist... so it's kind of boring, but it could be cool for your purposes because you can eventually put stronger spells into potions... potion of meteor swarm? That's a pretty sweet grenade.

Or you could just go artificer and make anything you wanted.

Could you elaborate on the Faerun thing, is it the Incantatrix? Also, could an artificer make a Potion of Meteor Swarm?!?

There is a couple alchemist classes on the boards. Most are FMA alchemists, though there was one that could do what you want. It gained the artificer ability to not spend exp while crafting them, could craft potions up to 9th level (he gained access to spell levels as a wizard), kept a recipe book (that only required time and gold, not exp to add more in), and things like that. However I believe it may have slipped into thread oblivion.

Check out the war medic in the Peach Orchard, its probably what your looking for.

Go with whatever you want. The war medic for instance could be a Dr. Victor Frankenstein character or could be a medic who's handy with explosives (doubles as an explosive ordinance technichian).

The alchemist could be roleplayed as the turn lead into gold character (granted thats bad business since if you could do that, it would be more profitable to convert lead into diamond, I believe its just a difference in the amount and arrangement of carbon in its molecules, though chem wasnt my best class).

Good PrCs
- Alchemist Savant (MoEb): it has an adaptation section.
- Master Alchemist (MoF)
