A good base for Alchemists are wizard/rogues, you need to have Craft(alchemy) and in the description of the skill "Must be a spellcaster to craft any of these items", as for a list of reagents to mix to make any of the alchemical items found in the PHB, DMG and Complete Adventurer, try looking in the specific entries for each alchemical item.

Most alchemical items like poisons require a specific venom or unrefined plant venom. Example of this is the spider poisons, they require the vemon sack of the appropriately sized spider.

Alchemists fire: two reagents that both stick to a surface and burst into flame upon contact with air.(These would be Magnesium and a specific flamable oil)

Suggested Skills and Feats: Craft(Poison), Craft(Alchemy), Knowledge(nature); Skill Focus[Craft(poison)], Skill Focus[Craft(alchemy)], Brew Potion.

I speak against Brew Potion: that only allows magical potions not alchemy.

Alchemy is not magic; though sometimes emulates it.

You only need Craft (Alchemy) and any skill that has synergy like Profession ( herbalist) might. And in D&D for some weird reason caster level 1.

Why does a magical caster make non-magical items we will never know :D

I threw that feat in there because I was covering all bases.

As far as herbal mixtures go. Pick up some Herbalist books from your local book store and use the lists of herbs in there for herbal brews for your character. I would suggest one, but I can't really say which is the best.

That's all there is to it.

Good question, I would really like to know. Though I have the hunch it has something to do with the fact that arcane casters are the ones with the most alchemical knowledge and most able to brew these concoctions.

Edit> Just found another source list for Herbs. It's an e-book that I found and it gives all you need for using it in D&D. Into google search type : D&D The Great Netbook of Herbs
