I know there is something like this in FR, or Eberron, ive read about it. No no this one, has anyone made anything based on the Anime Full Metal Alchemist? I have been pondering on tackling this myself, but unsure where to begin.

Artificer.

Nigh-exact, actually.

Spontaneous Fabricate, requiring all their infusions to be used on objects, relatively proficient in combat (with fringe cases like Armstrong being multiclass), and a heavy focus on intelligence and charisma. Created items are specialist tools used throughout the series (there's a LOT of them, even ones that aren't obvious such as Mustang's gloves, which resemble a Produce Flame / Fireball item) and can explain the generally high tech level despite a poorer understanding of advanced science.

Plus, the fact that with enough skill you can do essentially *anything* is reflected better in no other class. Artificers are *that* strong, *that* versatile, and can reach into essentially any book for appropriate spells. Infusions all require items and generally take a longer-than-normal time to use (i.e. time to draw the transmutation circle), but heroic artificers can speed these up (i.e. Ed no doubt was a PC, and thus had action points or a unique feat. Others who did it without a circle were NPCs with Heroic Spirit or a unique feat).

Some things, such as human transmutation and homunculi (in the FMA sense), don't transfer directly into D&D as it stands, but could easily make the focus of a campaign setting resplendent with artificers (i.e. if an artificer makes an item of Raise Dead (completes his theory of human transmutation) and tries to raise the dead, something bad happens. This is a property of artifice, though, and doesn't impinge on the clerics, who either don't know or aren't telling why they can do it and artificers can't).

All you need is a touch of custom flavor to Eberron's artificer, and you have a nigh-perfect match. You don't need to make a new class for this. At *worst* you'd need to make a few new infusions (i.e. Least Fabricate and Lesser Fabricate) and maybe a feat (require Heroic Spirit, remove the AP cost to hasten infusions).
