| BW022204-17-04, 09:34 AM | I've yet to see a "normal" party. However, the base core group is considered to be the fighter, wizard, rogue, and cleric. A DM who designs (or play tests) a module assuming that the party has these four classes in mind is likely creating fairly well-balanced encounters. In a similiar light, parties can do themselves good by planning around core classes -- even if their make up is totally different. Someone needs to be able to block, someone needs to be able to heal, someone to blast enemies, and someone to scout and handle traps. If you are completely void in one area, then you really need to think of ways of avoiding their need or ways to fill in magically. Thanks, Brett |

The best advice is to keep some sort of balance between magic users and fighter types, if you ask me. Not enough fighter types and the group has no stamina, because the mages run out of HP and spells in longer missions. Not enough magic users and the burly warriors lack the means to efficiently deal with certain types of encounters, such as invisible enemies, turnable undead, dispel-able magic obstacles, and so on. Having someone to deal with things like social situations, traps, and the like is nice, but not necessarily required. |
