| isaac anthony12-30-04, 09:25 PM | i'm wondering how balance these "alteration(s)" would be... 1st: drop the feat at 1st, and the d6 to d4. give him "spellcasting" all 10 levels, and give him -5% ACF at 1st, 4th, 7th, and 10th (so at 10th level he'd have -20% total). is that WAY to powerfull? thanks. |
| Raede12-30-04, 09:36 PM | if you want to reduce arcane spell failure, thats a spellsword ;) (see complete warrior) little more melee oriented but i see what you're getting at. more focus on casting and less on channeling spells through melee attacks. personally i think you should just take spellsword, the special abilities are worth it. id suggest more stringent entrance requirements if you wanted to do that. |
| isaac anthony12-30-04, 11:02 PM | yeah, that's kind-of what i'm going for, but i'd want full casting every level over ANY other feature of a PrC. i'd have other requirements as well, the one my DM liked was: must have worn armor for at least one "level" as a spellcaster. you can nit-pick at that all you want, but you know what i mean... |

If you're willing to go mostly offensive magics and don't mind losing out on the utility aspect, I got a suggestion for you that will give you optimum spells, and you'll only lose a total of 2 caster levels in the process. Levels 1 - 6: Warmage (Complete Arcane) Caster per day is like a Sorcerer, but they automatically know all spells on their list (and can add another at 3rd and 6th). Spells go up to 9th, are mostly damage oriented, and they can cast in light armor and light shields with no spell-fail, and gain a bonus to offensive spell damage equal to his Int mod. At 6th level you can cast 3rd, so you meet a couple requirements. Level 7: Warrior This meets your proficiency requirements and gives you a bonus feat. Level 8 - 18: Eldritch Knight Stick with it. Another bonus feat for a level that at least counts as a caster level (though you gain no more spells). Fighter's attack value and saves with increasing spellcasting... This will work awesome if you couple good feats with it. Want more? Cap it off by taking Warmage 2 more levels to 20, and you can cast in Heavy armor (coupled with a feat you'll take earlier) with no spell fail. Feats? This is where it gets fun. For play flexibility, I'll assume you're -not- doing a human. 1st Level: Battle Caster (C.Arcane) Coupled with 1st level class ability, you can cast in medium, no fail chance. 3rd Level: Extra Edge (C. Arcane) Will add +2 to the damage of all damage spells you cast. Not too important. Substitute with a melee-type feat if you think it would help more. 6th Level: Arcane Strike (C. Warrior) Sacrifice a spell for the day, to gain a combat bonus all round equal to level?! Hell yeah, with this build! At 6th level you'd only have 3rd level (getting 4th at level 10), but you can "burn" one casting for the day to get a +3 to hit for all attacks that round, which all do +3d4 damage per hit. Sweet. 9th Level+: I'd say... A Metamagic Feat such as Split Ray, so you can meet the requirements for Sudden Maximize at 12th. Really, from here on it's all up to you. You've got melee pretty boosted, casting in a shield and medium armor without spell failure, and if you need a ranged attack? That's what your Orb spells and such are for! Ranged touch, baby. That's just a suggestion to help maximize spell level and effect while keeping with the fighter-type in general. |

If you want full caster levels over anything else, just don't take a PrC. If you want to wear armour, take armour proficiency and still spell feats. By doing this you will cast spells better than an Eldritch Knight even if you still every spell because your caster level is 2 higher. Any spells you have that do not require somantic components (like Displacement) need not be stilled. The ignore ASF ability should remain with the Spellsword. The price you have to pay for it is a caster level every other level. |
