Are there any alternate class features available for the paladin's detect evil ability? Since I'm going to be playing a Church Inquisitor who also gains detect evil, I'd like to avoid redundancy.

If it were my campaign, I might let the range of the Detect Evil stack or increase to 90' like low-light vision. Superior Detect Evil :)

(chuckles) I like that idea. Along the same lines, it might be possible to have an "improved detect evil that covers a 60 ft radius instead of a cone.

Why? What's so wrong with two characters having Detect Evil?

Dragon 323 has an article on spells that can replace or supplement detect evil; since the class feature is just a permanent version of the spell, swapping for one of them resembles an even trade. Specifically, they were detect attitude, detect guilt, detect heresy and detect violence. Obviously you can expand the list as your own moral code requires.

I think he means having a paladin with the inquisitor PrC. Gaining Detect evil from both his base class and the PrC has no obvious benefits so he is looking for a house rule or official option to not waste one level of the PrC gaining an ability he already has.

Yup, I'm going for a Paladin 2/Cleric 3/Church Inquisitor 8. It's not mechanically optimal, but it makes sense for the character concept. Auto-passing most saves is fun, too. :)

Oh, sorry, misunderstood. Gotcha.

Detect Chaos?

Detect chaos would be a good choice, or perhaps Detect undead. Detect undead isn't going to be best for your character concept, however you could create your own class feature here. Perhaps some sort of Detect Shapchanger would work well for this character. It would nicely compliment the Inquisitor's Force Shapechange class feature. Aside from that, simply increasing the range of your Detect Evil would be a good option too.

I think that detect chaos and detect undead are good, easy fixes. Detect undead might make sense for my character concept, although I think that an improved detect evil makes even more. I'll run the idea by my DM. Thanks for suggestions, guys! If anyone does happen to run by anything official or have any brainstorms, however....

I like either increasing the range or changing the cone to a burst. But I'm thinking that being able to see past magic spells that conceal alignment like Undetectable Alignment might be better. It's an improved version of Detect Evil without really changing it too much. Peace.
