Lately it appears the trend of including alternate class features in Wizards books and Dragon has become widespread, and I love it. I see all these new features to old classes and think of "Hey! This is a great new way to play this class!" From all their appearances, I'm especially fond of the new fighter alternate class features in Dragon #355 (but thats more of a discussion for the Paizo boards). I haven't seen a thread about alternate class features ever, (though I probably missed one) and wanted to see if people thought ACF's could be a new "balancing" act that can "even" out the classes in terms of power. Thoughts?

Alternate class features are pretty cool. As a DM, I rather like using them as benefits for being a part of an organization (a neat idea I picked up from Expedition to Castle Ravenloft).

It's not that alternate class features CAN be a balancing act, they already are, and a much-needed one in many cases. Some of them actually don't go far enough, although many (such as the soulknife and wilder) are definitely steps in the right direction.

Specifically, these should be used to target specific weaknesses of the class that really shouldn't be there, of which there are many. In some cases though, an overall power boost with no cost is really not a bad idea (the fighter comes to mind...)
