Has anyone thought up any other combat styles for ranger other than two weapon and archery?

And how would they link to a ranger?

Out of interest, what made wizards decide that archery (i can kinda understand this one) and two weapons (i have no idea why) where the stereotypical ranger weapons.

Dragon magazine #326 has five alternate combat styles.
Beast Wrestling (improved grapple & stunning fist)
Mounted Combat
Piscator (trident & net)
Strong Arm Style (Power Attack)
Throwing Style (Thrown Weapons)

As far as what inspired WOTC to make the ranger styles archery & two-weapon fighting, two words: Aragorn, Legolas.

really not...
the guy who kidnapped the ranger class during second and 3.0 edition was drizzt... the two weapons fighting it is mainly because he...

and finally at 3.5 they realized that RANGer have some relation with RANGed weapons :P and used the most famous ranger of all times, robin hood.

I understand the legolas, but aragorn??
Aragorn uses a large sword. Sure he uses a bow but he's no uber with it shooting multiple arrows really fast.

What the...?! Hey! I got here first bub! (lol just kidding :D )

Actually, I posted a project dedicated to variants of combat styles that Rangers could potentially have.

As for you eggplantm...

Beast Wrestling (improved grapple & stunning fist)
Mounted Combat
Piscator (trident & net)
Strong Arm Style (Power Attack)
Throwing Style (Thrown Weapons)

... could you elaborate on these please (unless they violate so sort of WotC clause or whatever)? Me and some others have been looking for this kind of information.

and here i thought i was the only one wondering that. :P i never liked the idea of the Ranger getting TWF for free while the Fighter (dedicated to fighting ) had to pay for it. oh well. as long as it is balanced and ok by the DM you could really substitute most other fighting styles. just keep the same formula as you level up.

Aragon is the kind of ranger that uses two weapons as a specialty - his elven dagger and his longsword. Legolas specialises in shooting - hence his masterwork elven bow. Robin Hood only used one blade, but he is an archery specialist. Drizzt is a two-weapon fighting ranger.

Virtual Feats are at 2nd, 6th and 11th level for each style:

Beast-Wrestling Style: Improved Unarmed Strike, Improved Grapple, Stunning Fist)
Mounted-Combat Style: Ride-By Attack, Spirited Charge, Trample
Piscator Style: Exotic Weapon Proficiency (Net), Improved Trip, Improved Critical
Strong-Arm Style: Power Attack, Improved Sunder, Great Cleave
Throwing Style: Quick Draw, Point Blank Shot, Far Shot

Not so good IMHO, considering one could get all of the Feats in each of the variant styles by 8th level (for Beast-Wrestling and Piscator Styles), and below (Mounted-Combat and Strong-Arm Styles at 6th, Throwing Style at 3rd) with just level-based (and Human) Feats.

The styles should grant Virtual Feats commensurate with the levels they're gained at (as the standard TWF and archery combat styles are).
