| ZiggZagg04-29-07, 11:32 AM | I am currently playing in a low magic-style campaign, and I have found that Imbue item, and possibly even deceive item are going to be rather worthless for my Warlock. I am only level 2 now, but I want to know if there are any alternate class features in any books that replace one or both of these abilities. Thanks for the help! |
| ZiggZagg04-29-07, 01:40 PM | And this probably goes without saying, but if there are any, what sources are they from? |
| Metafictional04-29-07, 01:46 PM | How are they worthless? Is the DM saying you can't ever make or find magic items? Because since he allowed a Warlock, who has an endless well of magical power to draw from into the game, that doesn't make much sense. In a way, those are abilities an Artificer, one of the game's most powerful classes, would be very happy to have. Now if the DM is bound and determined to deny them to you, why not just ask if you can replace them for Bonus Feats? That's the easiest trade off. |
| ZiggZagg04-29-07, 01:49 PM | Well, my character has a certain storyline role. I say they are worthless because the chances of finding magic items to UMD is very scarce, and magic item creation is an all but forgotten concept in his world (for an in game reason), and I really don't want to take the feats for crafting (for a personal reason). Low Magic campaign make crafting items way too expensive for me to consider it. So I am just looking for something different to take in their place. |

| ZiggZagg05-01-07, 11:14 AM | Any help at all? |
| JellyPooga05-01-07, 11:18 AM | Well, aside from the "Bonus Feat" replacement that has already been suggested, I can't really think of a good alternative. Maybe if you make the bonus feat something that would not otherwise be available (like a feat that has a Racial requirement that you don't meet or something - one of the 'wings' feats might be appropriate if you're a 'demonic descendant' style of Warlock, for example) |
| Fallenangel35905-01-07, 11:47 AM | tell him that use magic device is a key ability to warlocks, and thats why they can take a 10 on it, and denying you magic items is about the same as taking a wizards spell list, after preparation and taking 1/2 of them out, randomly. Then explain to him that to balance the fact you can't use your key ability anymore, you should have bonus feats in replacement, and up your hit die to a d8, because he just locked you to something little more than a magical archer. |
| ZiggZagg05-01-07, 12:41 PM | I don't quite agree with that. I am not going to tell him he was wrong to build his campaign the way he did just because I PICKED a class that has an emphasis on UMD. I knew the rules of the campaign when I chose to play a Warlock. It is not like it was sprung on us that it was low magic after we picked classes. I already asked him about the bonus feats, and he agreed I could sub them in for those class abilities, so it's all good |
| UCsimplyme05-01-07, 03:56 PM | Well, I would go the other route then. Take Craft Wonderous Item and Craft Wand. How about YOU making it your mission to reintroduce magic in the world, one item at a time. You gain the ability to craft these items later as a class ability so you should take advantage of it. Just explain that your knowledge of how to make these items just showed up....kinda like your warlock powers. |
| ZiggZagg05-02-07, 12:18 AM | ...because, my purpose is actually to slay casters. LoL. Trust me, it makes sense with my character. My character hates Arcanists with a passion, and works for the church to hunt them down and assassinate them. Kinda like a church brainwashing the land for the past hundred years or so. As far as the general public goes, magic is a fairy tale. When casters actually pop up, the church quickly silences them...so I am one of these guys |
| Mordar05-02-07, 12:24 AM | if your theme is devil like you might want to think of replacing deceive and imbue item with some of the feats found in fiendish codex 2, of you can even replace them for the heritage ones in complete mage |
| ZiggZagg05-02-07, 12:31 AM | You know...honestly...I never really thought to ask. You see, my character's history is kinda up for debate. I came up with what my character knows, but not necessarily true. So I don't really know what his heritage is. |
| RobbyPants05-02-07, 10:17 AM | Maybe you can get the fiendish resistance to apply to another energy type in addition to how it normally works. If it seems too powerful, perhaps the new type only has half the resistance. |
| Mordar05-02-07, 10:17 AM | in any casy you can use PHB II variant warlock class feature but instead of taking away your fiendish resilience it takes away either your deceive item or your imbue item ability, that would be an acceptable trade off I think |
