Alright, I know there is already a thread similar in nature to this one, but I don't want to end up derailing that one too much with a related, but slightly off topic question.

I'm still relatively new to DMing and as such am still working on the idea of what's balanced and what's not.

Besically what it comes down to is I allowed a player to replace Sneak Attack with Fighter feats only....plus they still have to meet the level requirements of said feat. Example, Weapon Specialization is only first available to 4th level Fighters, so in the case of the Rogue their BAB must be equivalant to a 4th level fighter....so the earliest they would get access to such a feat would be level 6.

Originally when I said yes I was thinking of some things I had seen in Unearthed Arcana about doing similar switches. But after looking at it a bit more indepth it only seems to apply to the variant classes of the Expert, Warrior type set-up. The Expert doesn't have quite the number of skill points as the Rogue does and they don't have all the other cool Rogue class abilities like Trapfinding, Uncanny Doge, Evasion....etc.

Have I made a mistake letting the player get access to fighter feats this way or does the lower BAB and limited weapon and armor proficincies balance out against all the other roguish things?

By the way we have not yet started playing so nothing has been quite finalized.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

In Unearthed Arcana there is a section on class variants. After the "long" descriptions there is a series of "short" descriptions, which includes the rogue that gives up sneak attacks for 11 bonus feats, gained when the fighter gains them. It would be a little stricter than your idea, since this rogue would never have access to feats that require levels in fighter, like WS, GWF, and GWS.

I dont see anything wrong with the Thug a Fighter/Rogue variant

Sneak attack to me is equal to a feat.

Use the UA variant, but don't allow Fighter only feats.

I looked through the book half dozen times.....thanks for the map dierections, I finally found them. :)

After thinking about it more, I can see why you suggest not just Fighter feats. Along with the added restriction of not allowing things like the fighter only feats.

Thanks for the help :)

For a great rogue/ranger:

Level 2 warrior *2 free feats basically* and than go onto rogue/ranger levels, it isn't as good for bards. Tell him to try that instead of doing this balancing thing cause than he gets combat feats, some nice HP and still has his precious sneak attack, and with 11 combat feats he can only specialize so much...
