Who thinks it is wierd for Kensai to have 3/4 BAB progression??

- D10 HD... (like fighter who has full BAB)

- Combat orientated... (like barb/pally/ranger/fighter)

- Barb like STR buff for combat... (barbs have full BAB)

Whats the beef?

Well, I don't have a copy of CW on hand, but I could have sworn they had full BAB. The online references I've checked also all list it at full BAB. Are you sure they only have 3/4? Not reading the wrong table or something?

If they were listed at 3/4, it would certainly be an error.

I see nothing wrong with that. Maybe they are tougher than the average monk/rogue/cleric but no better at fighting. In my campaign I have a class with d6 hit die but with full BAB.

Just looked it up, and it is only a +7 at 10th level (3/4 BAB progression... Seems odd to me, but you mentioned online sources... Just curious, but what online sources did you consult?... I couldn't find an errata either...

It is only 3/4 progression for a few reasons. The main being, if it was full BAB, most fighters would take it then without thinking about it. When you play a fighter, how many times do you NOT use your main weapon? And it is suppose to be more monk-ish then fighter-esque.

I can see that....

May be why I prefer the weapon master instead...

Or, the Kensai variant fighter out of Dragon #310...

Does this fighter variant get full BAB? And Signature weapon?

While board CoC prevents me from posting details in full, I will say what I think I can w/o violating the CoC...

yes, it is a fighter as it is in the book, but only profient with light armor (don't know about shield; I think all but tower), only one martial or exotic weapon plus all simple, differnt skill package, and no fighter feat at 1st level...

instead, they get a signature weapon (the single martial or exotic weapon) which they get a +1 to hit and damage for every 5 levels they have obtained... Also, thier fighter bonus feats are basicly the same, but any that pertain to a particular weapon are limited to their signature weapon only...

Beyond that, a standard fighter...

There are others too that are cool...

With full BA B everybody would take this class and leave no other prestiges classes in use? Seriously, who in their right mind would stay a fighter if the Kensai was +1 BAB??? The ability to use concentration checks for reflex saves alone is worth it. Not to mention the strength enhancement (with no future penalty) and the ability to enhance social skills.

Noce class no matter how you look at it.

Is the Fighter Variant actually better at combat then Kensai PrC but less flexible then? I need to see the info on that class... damn not having that Dragon issue.

As noted, the Power Surge ability offsets the BAB loss. +8 Str means a +4 to attack and damage, and that more than offsets the 3 points of BAB loss, IMHO. You'll possibly be making one less attack, but you'll be more likely to hit and deal more damage with the attacks that hit. And while it's only a few times a day, my paladin-planning-on-Kensai already has a +10 to his Concentration check, and he's only level 4. With a few more abilities and boosts to it, when I first get the ability I should be able to get it reliably 3 times a day.

And, as noted, the other abilities are very nice. Your Concentration check is going to be huge, because of the Power Surge ability, so that Withstand ability is incredible; at my current levels (it'll only get better later) it would give my paladin a +10 to save, rather than a +3. And signature weapon; unless your DM is in the habit of handing out custom-crafted weapons, being able to design your own +10 weapon, which you can have as early as level 16, is pure gold. Especially since, comparatively, you can then spend the price of a +10 weapon out of your share on other toys.
