I made this custom ability for one of my base classes, and was wondering if you guys thought was balanced.

The class uses a pair of pistols as his weapon but thats the only thing you need to know to understand the ability.

Shoot Mercifully

At any time the Templar may reduce the damage of his attack to whatever he wishes. The process goes as follows: First roll an attack to determine if you landed your shot, then roll for damage. then you are permitted to lower your damage to what you wish but not above what you rolled.

This mainly an ability for RP aspects and so you don't accidently overkill your target.

"lower your damage to what you wish but not above what you rolled"...I assume this means you can't go lower than the number on the die? For instance, if I have a +5 damage bonus, I can knock off up to 5 points?

I see no balance issues with this. Frankly, it's a de-powering ability, so there's really not a problem.

More like this:

you roll 2d6+9, the result is a total of 15 damage. You can lower it to anything between 15 and 1. You cant have less than 1 since you really did just shoot them.

I can't think of any problems with this.
