The ANARCHIST! Prestige Class

http://watch.windsofchange.net/pics/2003-06-21T195155Z_01_THE19D_RTRIDSP_2_EU-SUMMIT-PROTEST.jpg

The ANARCHIST! is somebody who fights for direct democracy –they believe people should be able to run their own lives without unnecessary restrictions, or dictation from ‘higher powers’ as to how to act.

Requirements
To qualify to become an ANARCHIST! (AN!), a character must fulfil all the following criteria.
Alignment: Any non-evil chaotic
Skills: Must have at least 6 ranks in two out of the following skills:
Diplomacy, Sense Motive, Wilderness Lore/Survival, Perform(Protests and riots).
Feats: Must have the feat Rioter and any 3 of the following feats:
Leadership, Iron Will, Sacred Vow, Negotiator, Persuasive, Protester, Protest Veteran, Pyro, Friendly Masked Face
Abilities: At least 12 Int, and 8 Wis.
Special: The character must have thrown off the shackles of non-direct democratic forms of government. He must ALWAYS act in an anarchic way – he will not ‘lead’ a party, will not honour a Mayor any more than a commoner, believes in equal rights for all races and sexes, etc. Should an ANARCHIST! ignore this for some reason, he immediately loses all class benefits until he atones for this act. The player can draw up a code of conduct for the particular ANARCHIST! in question.

Game Rule Information
Inexplicables have the following game statistics.
Base Attack Bonus: Average (as a Rogue)
Hit Die: d6
Saves: Good Will, Average/Poor Fortitude/Reflex.
Class Skills: The ANARCHIST!’s class skills are Alchemy (Int), Animal Empathy (Cha), Bluff (Cha), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Disguise (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (Protests and Riots), Knowledge (Nobility, Royalty and Political Systems) (Int), Listen (Wis), Perform (Cha), Sense Motive (Wis), Search (Wis), Spot (Wis), and Wilderness Lore/Survival (Wis).
Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Intelligence modifier.

Class Features
All of the following are class features of the ANARCHIST! prestige class.
Weapons and Armour Proficiency: An ANARCHIST! gains no additional proficiency with any weapons or armour, other than the proficiency given by the Rioter if they choose to take it as a Bonus Feat.
Bonus Feat, You’re An Odd One…, Helmet Cracker
**** a Brick, On His Head, Son! +1
Overtly Chaotic, No Laws! +2, Tools Of The Trade
Bonus Feat, On His Head, Son! +2
No Laws! +4, Brick-Lugger
Pyro, On His Head, Son! +3
Bonus Feat, Molotov Shaken, Not Stirred
No Laws! +6, On His Head, Son! +4
Break The Corporate Windows, Brick Me Happy
Burn ‘Em All!, On His Head, Son! +5

Bonus Feat: Chosen from the list of prerequisite feats, if the ANARCHIST! has already taken all the feats there, the feat can be taken either from the BoED, Complete Warrior, or the PHB.

You’re An Odd One…: The ANARCHIST is obviously Chaotic, and anybody attempting to figure out his/her alignment with a d20 check receives a +2 bonus to the check. This only applies to figuring out the chaotic part of the ANARCHIST!’s alignment – use the check result without this +2 to figure out their alignment on the good/evil axis. If they attempt the same thing with a divination for the same purpose with a save DC, the DC is raised by 2.

Helmet Cracker: The ANARCHIST! receives the feat Point Blank Shot whenever he uses an improvised thrown weapon, even if he/she doesn’t meet the prerequisites.

**** a Brick: The ANARCHIST! receives the feat Far Shot whenever he uses an improvised thrown weapon, even if he/she doesn’t meet the prerequisites. No Laws!: +2, +4, or +6 bonus to saving throws against law-based abilities and spells with the law descriptor. The bonus increases as the ANARCHIST! levels up.

On His Head, Son!: The ANARCHIST! confers a +1 Ki bonus on all improvised thrown weapons. This bonus increases as the ANARCHIST! levels up. Some of the bonus can be used to confer a magical property, such as Flaming, on the weapon. If this happens, the property counts as fuelled by Ki, not magic, for the purposes of taking the Forsaker class, etc.

Overtly Chaotic: Anyone who attempts a Sense Motive check to find out the ANARCHIST!’s alignment automatically realises the ANARCHIST! is chaotic, and any divination used for the same purpose automatically reveals the chaotic part of their alignment.

Tools Of The Trade: The ANARCHIST! receives an inherent bonus of +2 to any three class skills. This is because he/she is used to using these skills to survive outside the law, provide for themselves, etc.

Brick-Lugger: The ANARCHIST! receives the feat Rapid Shot whenever he uses an improvised thrown weapon, even if he/she doesn’t meet the prerequisites.

Pyro: The ANARCHIST! receives the feat Pyro (Song and Silence) as a bonus feat. If he/she already has it, the effects stack.

Molotov Shaken, Not Stirred: The ANARCHIST! can count alchemist’s fire, fire arrows, fireball potions, and other thrown fire effects as ‘improvised thrown weapons’ for class features such as Helmet Cracker.

Break The Corporate Windows: The ANARCHIST! receives the feat Weapon Specialization: Improvised Thrown Weapons, even if he/she doesn’t meet the prerequisites.

Brick Me Happy: The ANARCHIST! can make an extra attack at his/her highest base attack bonus with improvised thrown weapons.

Burn ‘Em All!: The ANARCHIST! gains fireball 1/day as a supernatural ability, and gains +1d6 damage with fire-based attacks.

Rioter.
Benefits: The character is counted as proficient in the use of all 'improvised weapons'. Note: This does not allow her to cheat and count a greatsword as an improvised weapon if she is not proficient in its use. This applies only to everyday objects, objects lying around in the immediate area, simple weapons, and maybe certain other weapons depending on how generous the GM is.
Normal: The character can't hit **** with a brick.
Special: The character must have some kind of revolutionary ethics or political beliefs - she may be vegan, communist, anarchist, pacifist, Marxist, pro-choice/pro-life, pro-gay rights, pro-women’s' rights, pro-animal rights, or a member of a protesting group such as Greenpeace, any anarchist collective, a communist political party, etc.

Protester.
Benefits: The character has access to the skills Knowledge(protests and riots) and perform(protests and riots). These skills always count as class skills for this character. The knowledge refers to the ability of the character to recall information about theory of protest and historical protests. The perform allows the character to plan and carry out a protest (only one check is required), that fulfils several criteria....
Modifier - DC
Basic protest - noticed by passers-by 5
Heavy police presence nearby +5
Passers-by know they will not be harmed +5
Noticed by local media +5*
Noticed by major media +10*
Noticed internationally +15*
In a very public place -5
In a fairly public place 0
In a private or secret place +10
In an abandoned or wilderness area impossible
*apply only the highest of these modifiers

If you can hold up traffic, stop business in the area, or cause a riot, you add 5 to your check. Each of these modifiers are cumulative.

Protest Veteran.
Prerequisites: Protester
Benefits: The character gets a +2 bonus to Knowledge(Protests) and Perform(Protests)

Friendly Masked Face.
Prerequisites: Protester
Benefits: The character gains a +2 bonus to all diplomacy checks involving the public or media when at a protest or protest-related riot, and the +5 DC to make the public feel safe using Perform(Protests) is ignored.

Before anyone asks, yes, you can apply Flaming, Icy, etc, to alchemist's fire bottles, etc:)

EDIT: Changed some things as suggested by islandir, thanks for pointing them out.:)

Direct Democracy ??? where did you find that from ?? Anarchy is not Direct Democracy it is just Anarchy ... :smirk:

The player can draw up a code of conduct for the particular ANARCHIST! in question.

Game Rule Information
Inexplicables have the following game statistics.
Base Attack Bonus: Poor (as a Rogue)

the BAB for Rogue is Average. Poor is for a BAB like the Wizard.

Hit Die: d6
Saves: Good Will, Average/Poor Fortitude/Reflex.
Class Skills: The ANARCHIST!’s class skills are Alchemy (Int), Animal Empathy (Cha), Bluff (Cha), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Disguise (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Heal (Wis), Knowledge (Protests and Riots), Knowledge (Nobility, Royalty and Political Systems) (Int), Perform (Cha), Sense Motive (Wis), and Wilderness Lore/Survival (Wis).

I would add Listen and Spot to the list. Essential skills to an anarchist in order to know when/where to bring chaos

Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Intelligence modifier.

All of the following are class features of the ANARCHIST! prestige class.
Weapons and Armour Proficiency: An ANARCHIST! gains no additional proficiency with any weapons or armour, other than the proficiency given by the Rioter if they choose to take it as a Bonus Feat.

Burn ‘Em All!, On His Head, Son! +5

Bonus Feat: Chosen from the list of prerequisite feats, if the ANARCHIST! has already taken all the feats there, the feat can be taken either from the BoED, Complete Warrior, or the PHB.

Do you mean that the Anarchist will then be allowed to choose ANY feat from any Core book?

You’re An Odd One…: The ANARCHIST is obviously Chaotic, and anybody attempting to figure out his/her alignment with a d20 check receives a +2 bonus to the check. This only applies to figuring out the chaotic part of the ANARCHIST!’s alignment – use the check result without this +2 to figure out their alignment on the good/evil axis. Hehehe like Father like Son ... hmm is that not a bit to orderly ??? :smirk:

Pyro: The ANARCHIST! receives the feat Pyro as a bonus feat. If he/she already has it, the effects stack.

Do you have any pointer to where the Pyro feat is from ? I could not find it in my books and it is not in your list below

I find it pretty funny. Maybe I should not but still I do :D

Ahem...

3 entries found for anarchy.
an·ar·chy ( P ) Pronunciation Key (nr-k)
n. pl. an·ar·chies
Absence of any form of political authority.
Political disorder and confusion.
Absence of any cohesive principle, such as a common standard or purpose.

There couldn't be a direct democracy, cuz by definition, the anarchist would work to destroy all forms of government. No leader, no welfare, no income taxes, no military, etc...

Characters would have to be either chaotic neutral or neutral evil to take this PrC. "I couldn't give a flying f*ck about anyone else!" What you probably meant to say was socialist, not anarchist.

Hey you know what would REALLY help fix the American economy? Ending all federal foreign aid and telling any indebted nations that while they don't have to pay back their debts and we'll freely trade with them, that they have to fend for themselves instead of relying on evil capitalist America's superproductivity.

Oh, and pulling out of NATO, the UN and getting out of Iraq and the entire middle east.

And no, I'm most certainly NOT republican (or dem, for that matter)

I'm an Anarchist, and I for one can say you're talking crap.
I hope Kedi agrees with me here, you're damn wrong. Anarchists do not just say oh well, today i'm not going to give a damn abou anyone else, so i'm chaotic neutral.

Yeah, well look at this definition of anarchism!
the theory that all forms of government interfere unjustly with individual liberty and should be replaced by the voluntary association of cooperative groups

We don't just "Hey, I don't give f*** about you today, so I'm gonna burn your house down!"

   Well, the defination of anarchism is absence of any authority. Anarchism believe in a order where no rules are needed, they don't just want "down with rules! slay 'em all!" Most of people confuse anarchy with terror, but right opposite, anarchy believes in equality of people. If people were smart enough not to hurt each other or act non-sense, there wouldn't be any rules. Think, if no one steals, would be theiving banned? Don't think so. Thus, anarchist believe in no need of rules, and let every person judge themselves.

To back up Kedi's argument-
"When masks are outlawed, only outlaws will wear masks"
- a well known anarchist phrase.
Correct, kedi, but there are ways of regulating people's behaviour within a collective without having a government - militia-like groups controlled by the people could imprison people for crimes such as rape, murder, GBH or major theft.
Anarchy can be organized, ironically enough.

Constructive criticism, praise are welcome.

I still see what you're saying as more like socialism, though...because who regulates equality in a system where there is no government?

I am not equating anarchy with terror...hell, I'm a "minarchist" (I believe in very small government), but I don't see total equality being attained in a society without any government. The moment one person wants to bend/break the rules, what's there to stop him or her?

All you've been doing since my first post has been talking politics but fine...

I think you should change the class name to socialist, as it is a more accurate reflection of the class members' beliefs.

"Anarchists" should believe in the theory of what goes around, comes around. They should be chaotic any, not excepting evil. There WILL be people who simply don't care about anything but themselves and use anarchist society to their advantage.

I would rather stay out of a political discussion so I just have one comment, change the alignment requirement to any chaotic. It isn't sane to claim that everyone with a certain veiwpoint can't be evil. I could go around claim that Christians can't possibly be evil, but thats complete garbage.

Also (I guess I do have another comment) I don't think anarchist should really be a prestige class, its more of an alignment and personality. Just like I don't think a liberal or a christian prestige class would make sense. What you have created seems more like a rioter prestige class.

03-26-04, 03:42 PM
OK, I think I should justify my choice- I have never met an Anarchist that I would describe as anything other than good, though I'm sure some neutral ones exist.

Anybody who 'takes advantage of an anarchic society', as you put it, would not be an anarchist in particular, as I am representing people who fight violently for their anti-government beliefs with the reasons of freedom and equality in mind. I see a lot of the class abilities as being powered by one's faith in 'The Cause', and not just any old skill.

Also, is somebody who takes advantage of anarchy, but truly believes in it and has faith in equality, etc, not Chaotic Neutral rather than evil?
Hope that explains some of my decisions:)

i agree that this class should be any chaotic. what about the person who hates authority and wants it destroyed at all costs? yes, they do believe in freedom and equality, but they use thougholy evil means to do so ex. torture, murder in cold blood, murder of innocents. someone who meets all other requirements for your class and will burn down the mayor's house (with his family in it) does seem to do the same thing as your anarchist. maybe call the evil ones nihilists?(sp?)

Let me get this clear for once and all - yes, these people exist. But they are not the ones with this prestige class. Just like there are champions of evil gods, but they do not take paladin as a class.....

Its my feeling that you're letting your personal political beliefs get in the way of making a rational prestige class.

From your website...
Anarchy IS:
*The absence of any form of government.
*'Direct Democracy' - whereby people take their lives into their own hands.

Does anyone see the how little sense that makes? Direct democracy is a form of government, ask ancient Athens. If you believe in direct democracy, you are by definition NOT an anarchist.

Anarchists are dedicated to the overthrow of government, that's what makes them anarchists. As such, an anarchist prestige class should be dedicated to the overthrow of government. That's the basic tenet of anarchy, not this bunk about all anarchists being about individual rights and liberties and other assorted rhetoric. I'm for individual rights and liberties, I'm for the government staying out of my affairs, but that doesn't make me an anarchist (I consider my primary political allegiance to be Libertarian). If I wanted no government whatsoever, then that would make me an anarchist. As far as the class's alignment goes in regards to those ideals, yeah, some are gonna be all upon those 'em -- the good and maybe neutral ones. Other people may seek the overthrow for government for selfish reasons, but because of their aims (the abolition of government), they too qualify as anarchists.

There are a few black and white facts (not opinions, definitions and facts) that you're overlooking.

If you are good and want to do away with government, you are an anarchist.
If you are evil and want to do away with government, you are an anarchist.
If you believe in direct democracy, you are not an anarchist, because you believe in a form of government.

So keeping the non-evil requirement doesn't make a whole lot of sense, in my opinion. Anarchists are not necessarily crusaders for the people, the one defining trait that runs through all people who call themselves anarchists is that they want to put an end to government. The alignment requirement is just you letting your real life beliefs (which don't seem entirely thought out and logical, though I do see where you're coming from) unnecessarily bias this prestige class.
sgingell

04-04-04, 01:44 PM
You could avoid any political arguments by renaming the class "Rioter" or "Protester". All the abilities are based around improvised weapons use and creating effective riots. The abilities would be as useful to a facist mob as to a anarchic one.

More seriously the class doesn't fit sensibly into the D&D class system. A guy who's thing is throwing bricks at the police needs to be a fighter varient if he's going to shine in that role. A guy with d6 HD and Rogue base attack just can't be at the front lines of a serious clash with the authority figures.

What you want is something with full attack progression and a d10 HD who has some neat protest/crowd control abilities. On the same sort of model as Paladins as fighters with some clerical goodies or Rangers as fighters with some nature goodies, you might be better served by a fighter type with some performance/crowd control abilities.

Indulging in the politics for a moment I fail to see how "militia like groups" with powers of arrest wouldn't *be* a government. That's what the police *are*. The government is just the rules about who they can arrest (the laws) and how we decide what those rules should be (the legislature). Maybe you don't like the legislature's list, but given that you've mentioned outlawing violent crime the only thing left in US law is property crime. If you're against property rights then your flat denial of being a socialist seems confusing at best.

;)

And to continue the OT discussion: riceisnice makes a number of very good, very valid points.

Crossroads in the discussion: if Anarchists don't necessarily belive in violence, then why is this class all about chucking bricks and fire?

To the class!

The bonus increases as the ANARCHIST! levels up.Split these up. It's just a formatting error, but still.

On His Head, Son!: The ANARCHIST! confers a +1 Ki bonus on all improvised thrown weapons. This bonus increases as the ANARCHIST! levels up. Some of the bonus can be used to confer a magical property, such as Flaming, on the weapon. If this happens, the property counts as fuelled by Ki, not magic, for the purposes of taking the Forsaker class, etc.Ki bonus? *pulls a Spock* And what does "can be used to confer a magical property" mean, exactly? Are you tryi9ng to say that he can change it every time he throws? Personally, I'd just set to to "Flaming" and be done with it, especilly since he gets Fireball at the end.

Brick Me Happy: The ANARCHIST! can make an extra attack at his/her highest base attack bonus with improvised thrown weapons. This seems redundant: he already gets Rapid Shot.

Burn ‘Em All!: The ANARCHIST! gains fireball 1/day as a supernatural ability, and gains +1d6 damage with fire-based attacks.A) Caster level?
B) At this level, fireball isn't gonna be doing that much. Bump it up to X ability mod/day or just 3/day.
C) What do you mean by "fire-based" attacks? I'd just like a little more definition.

EDIT:
More seriously the class doesn't fit sensibly into the D&D class system. Now that I've had a chance to think about it, it really doesn't. The concept makes perfect sense ,but this class belongs in d20 Modern (which fits it like a glove), not DnD. Especially "Rioter." What makes you think there would have been a media (much less an *International* media) in the middle ages?
