"+1 spell level" - How is this supposed to work? [Archive] - Wizards Community

I've had this question come up in a recent game, and even though I had an answer to it, I couldn't find proof that I was right in the books.

With PrCs that give you +1 level of existing arcane spellcasting class:

Let's say you're a Lv. 12 wizard, and you become an Archmage. What all happens when you gain that level of AM, as far as your spells go?

Do you gain a 7th level spell as you would for being a lv. 13 wizard? Do you gain the 2 spells of any level that you normally would have? Do you not get either one of those, and only have the things such as your save DC for your spells raise?

I've always had it work as though you just gained another level of wizard. So, you would get your 7th level spell, and you would get your 2 spells of any level you can cast. But that you wouldn't gain things like the wizard's bonus feats and things like that.

So, how exactly does this work?

You're doing it the right way. No feats, no familiar.

Some classes, such as the Hierophant only grant more caster levels. Be sure to read the "Spells" entry of any prestige classes your players take, so that you are not mistaken.

Some classes can advance both arcane and divine spells at the same time (Mystic Theurge).
Some either arcane or divine (Loremaster).
And some only arcane or divine (Archmage and Hierophant).
