I have no idea if this exists or not, but I'm looking for a way to make a gadget based class. Less magical and more technological for a game set in the Ptolus campaign setting.

A friend has the idea for a halfling gadgeteer but we don't quite know how to go about making it.

An Artificer doesn't really do what he's looking for, any other suggestions.

Thanks

An Archivist would have the necessary Int for the job, while being able to cast Divine Insight to rapidly craft anything. That might work. There's also the combat trapsmith.

Thanks for the ideas man, I'll look around and try to find those classes.

Well, my immediate instinct was to recommend the Artificer, but you've apparently already shot that down. I may be able to help if you tell me why exactly Artificer won't work?

He's not completely against an Artificer, I think it might work for him, he was just looking at someone more adept at making alchemical items like smoke bombs, handy gadgets and items to benefit the party. An Artificer played right would work in my opinion, I'm just trying to find some other ideas.

Is there an alchemist class?

Actually, now that you mention it, I'm positive there's an Alchemist prestige class or some such in an Eberron book somewhere, but that's as specific as I can be, I'm afraid.

There is a Tinker Base class archived here somewhere. Look it up.

Any class with high ranks in Craft?

If you have the time and patience to adapt a 3.0 prestige class, and have a campaign setting that will fit with a little steam punk technology, I recommend the Gnome Artificer from Magic of Faerun.

Its a ten level prestige class that lets you create non-magical devices that mimic select spell effects. They cost no XP and anyone can use them, so if you have the cash and time you can equip the whole party with armor with a jet pack welded on to it, or steam powered sound cannons! ENJOY!

Let me also suggest using some of the non-magical equipment in Arms and Equipment Guide and Song and Silence. There's a ton of great stuff in there that will appeal to the gadgeteer. A rogue with a lot of skill points can make use of the craft skill to make these items, and that rogue also has the skills, abilities, and role to put them to use.

Well considering there isn't any "technology" in D&D that isn't actually based around magic, this may be a little difficult while staying in D&D...

All I can think of is the Maester or Effigy Master PrC.

Gnome Artificer from Faerun is based on Technology (Steam, Gears, Flammable Liquids etc) at least till 9th level when they have to dabble in shadow magic to get their greater effects working...

Metal alloys (i.e. steel) = technology
Wheels = technology
Animal Domestication= technology

Now, maybe there is no industrial revolution or later technology. But that could be as much the product of not needing technology, as magic can fill the void (or the gods prevent it), as opposed to technology not working.

This almost sounds like a macGyver class request...

Indeed. Try a factotum then, telling that flavor-wise the various Cunning X/Brains-over-Brawns bonuses, and all other various class features, are in fact application of gadgets.

An Int-boosted Climb check ? He used a specially-designed climbing harness. Swim ? swimming suit with "fins". Etc.
The same goes for the Arcane Dilettante. Just used knock ? No, it was an automatic lock-opener, that just needs some repair before being useful again (next day).

Where is the Factotum from? I've heard people talking about it, but I've never seen it..

Dungeonscape. The book is worth buying even if only for that class.;)
