The "Gaining Class Benefits" on page 198 of the DMG was difficult to intrepret.

It says "one week every two levels, rounded up", does that mean that for a 1st level character they must train .5 weeks, one week rounded up, and that a 6th level character must train 3 weeks?

Also, it says 1000gp a week. This makes up a lot of their treasure (if not all and a few profession checks worth) at lower levels, which I don't mind (cause I like seeing my players be middle-aged or old before they can reach 15th level), but is it safe to say that it would take only 500gp for a 1st level to go 2nd, since before rounding it was .5 weeks, and therefore cut the costs a bit?

Does this belong in another forum or does nobody know? (Ugh...I hate bumping...but I need to know...)

If it says to round up, then there aren't going to be any .5 weeks, not .5, 1.5, 2.5, or whatever.
Since you never train for .5 weeks, you never pay for .5 weeks.

The particulars depend on what it says your training is based on.
If it is based on the level you are, then a 1st or 2nd level character will train for 1 week and pay 1000 gp, a 3rd or 4th level character will train for 2 weeks and pay 2000 gp, etc.
If it is based on the level you are advancing to, then a character going to 2nd level will train for 1 week for 1000 gp, advancing to 3rd or 4th will take 2 weeks and cost 2000 gp, etc.

The training rules are optional, if I remember, and with reason... As you mentioned, it will take a large amount of a low level characters wealth, and there are also situational concerns. If you are in the middle of a major quest taking you to other planes, there are hardly trainers around.
Generally it is assumed that you trained your fighting/thieving/whatever skills as you were in the process of leveling up.

Anyway, hope that helped.
