| Rechan03-07-06, 02:01 PM | As WotC introduces more and more suppliments, introducing non-core classes, its' becoming just a little difficult to find adjectives for various classes. Used to, there was just "Wizard". In your campaign from a fluff perspective, you could call him a mage, a magus, an occultist, a sorcerer, a warlock, an oracle, a magician, a witch, adept, etc. But now, when you say "I am a sorcerer of the black blood!" you can give the false impression that your spellcaster is a Sorcerer, not any number of magic user classes. It can be a little confusing or misleading. :) So, I'm wondering are there any other adjectives we could use for the various classes that havn't been taken yet, to avoid these mixups? |
| Rivelstraz03-07-06, 02:12 PM | Well, for roleplaying purposes, any would work. Remember that classes are not jobs, so a wizard could just say he's an "arcanist", so could a warlock, sorcerer, etc. I've also seen used "conjurer" to call 'mages' overall, so well... |
| Rechan03-07-06, 02:20 PM | Right. All I'm just saying is a general thesaurus of variable names to keep some variety open. "Arcanist" definitely adds to the list. Occultist could describe, well, anyone who dabbles in magical lore and practice. |
| The_Unfan03-07-06, 02:24 PM | Well a fighter and a brawler would be the same thing. |
| Aktariel03-07-06, 02:49 PM | There is of course the ever popular "mage" - unless they made a class like that already (and archmage doesn't count)and its less popular derivative, magician. Arcanist Occultist Spell-slinger Mage/Magi/Magus |
| TheWinterBard03-07-06, 06:45 PM | You could just cut it down to simple "spellcaster". But "arcanist" is definitely the best, IMO. |
| thasis03-07-06, 06:50 PM | Go back to 1e and call them Magic-Users :P |
| Rechan03-07-06, 07:06 PM | Okay, you guys are kinda missing my point. I'm trying to come up with various In Character adjectives to describe various spellcasters. I'm not looking for a blanket term, just a list of various ones. For instance, using plug and play with "I am Oanos, ___ Of the Blackened Book, sunderer of Mountains". In ___, you'd put the various adjective. Like 'Cabalist' or 'Magus of the Blackened Book'. No spellcaster in his right mind, with any ounce of ego, is going to call himself a spellcaster. ;) |
| Milo HoBo03-07-06, 07:39 PM | Spell slinger is really nice though. It has the same ring as gun slinger (as from the dark tower). A warlock would almost fit the bill, but he would more likely be a scroll slinger (since he doesn't cast spells, but makes use of UMD). Magician has an illusionist feel to it, more than likely from our society's concept of magic. Occultist remindes me more of divine casters and binders (ToM), but maybe it's just me. Maybe 'Mage' is the only thing that is normally associated specifically with casting, yet isn't so specific that is clouds the image. Arcanist is nice too, but it is specific to arcane spell casters. I do agree that the naming scheme is getting a little muddy. |

| DocBeard03-07-06, 09:15 PM | Really, if your wizard wants to call himself a sorcerer, where's the harm? |
| Rechan03-08-06, 02:07 AM | Really, if your wizard wants to call himself a sorcerer, where's the harm? Just a matter of taste. |
| CaoSlayer03-08-06, 03:12 AM | also it is a thing of the setting, at dragonlance campaign every wizard was called sorcerer. |

| CzarGarrett03-08-06, 12:29 PM | Add to list: Magi |
