| Anshin Mandango11-17-05, 05:33 PM | okay, the basic idea i had is that just as warlocks are those special few born with an innate command of magic, there would be some in the monk schools with a born inate understanding of there inner Ki energy, who would progress leaps and bounds beyond "normal" monks (who can already punch though adamantine walls with their bare hands). mechanically, i'd like to represent this sort of like a more martial warlock, with a Ki blast that progresses in levels along the same lines of the eldritch blast, different "techniques" that allow them to find creative ways to utilize thier Ki (modeled after the warlocks invocations) and a few of the monk abilities (dimond body, perfect self, tongue of the sun and moon, ect.) to balance this out, i'm thinking posible combination of any and maybe all of the following: reduce HD to a d6, remove the AC and movement speed bonuses, as well as slow fall, abundant step, still mind, purity of body, and diamond soul, and replace them with equivilant "techniques", greatly tone down the unarmed strike damage to max out at 1d8, maybe 1d10, as they would focus thier training more on Ki attacks, and wouldn't have the same level of focus with thier unarmed strikes as a normal monk who has almost nothing else to rely on. eliminate the ki strike abilities, replace with what would ammount to hidious blow with a different name (maybe just call it Ki smite or something). get rid of flurry entirely, as well as quivering palm. keep evasion and improved evasion, drop the bonus feats, maybe include uncanny dodge and improved uncanny dodge. anyway, what i want to know is what you people on the boards think of the idea so far, further opinions on how balanced my ideas are (and suggestions on how to better balance them if you can think of any other ways), and most importantly, do you think this would possibly be better suited as a PrC? I eagerly await your comments. Thank you. so… I imagine something a little like this then… MONKLOCK Alignment: Any lawful. Hit Die: d8. BAB: med (as monk) Class Skills The monklock’s class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are Balance (Dex), Climb (Str), Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Hide (Dex), Jump (Str), Knowledge (arcana) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), Perform (Cha), Profession (Wis), Sense Motive (Wis), Spot (Wis), Swim (Str), and Tumble (Dex). These techniques fall into three general categories, those that add some special effect to his Ki blast ability are known as “Ki essence Techniques”, those that change the area of effect of his Ki blast are “Blast shape Techniques” and those techniques that grant some new ability altogether are simply “Special Techniques”. Ki essence Techniques: Novice: Frightful Blast*?*, Sickening Blast Adept: Shining Blast (beshadowed blast), Dragon Blast (brimstone blast), Turtle Blast (hellrime blast) Advanced: Rainbow Blast (bewitching blast), Unbalancing Blast (Noxcious Blast), Repelling Blast, Virtuous Blast (as Vitrolic blast, but catches target on fire instead*?*) Master: “Hadoken” (deals Force damage, one half of all damage is either sacred or profane damage depending on the monklock’s aligniment*?*) Blast shape techniques: Novice: Ki spear (eldritch spear), Ki Strike (hideous blow) Adept: Ki missiles (affects a maximum number of targets equal to monklock level, no two of which may be further then 5ft per 4/monklock levels apart*?*) Advanced: Dragon’s Breath (Eldritch cone) Master: Typhoon (Eldritch doom) Special Techniques: Novice: Ki shout (Baleful utterance), Shining Spirit (light spell centered on self), Leaps and Bounds, See the Unseen, Others*?* Adept: Unbounded Stride (fell flight, but no wings), Abundant Step (flee the scene), Voidsense, Walk unseen*?* Advanced: Trial by Fire (wall of perilous flame), Calling (warlock’s call), others*?* Master: Foresight (dark forsight), others*?* |
| malykoth11-17-05, 05:50 PM | Not sure about the idea (I guess it could work), but I love the name..."monklock"... :D |
| Anshin Mandango11-17-05, 05:58 PM | eh... it's all i could come up with on short notice (it does sound better then Waronk, though, you have to admit), glad you like it though, anyone else? perhaps i should mention i don't want this to become some Goku clone class, more like Ryu from street fighter, only with less punching and more "Ha-do-ken's" |
| FlameLover11-17-05, 06:09 PM | Here is how see it, this is modified from the Warlock class btw: - Bump HD up to d8 - Keep BAB at average progression - Raise all saves to good - Halve the progression of invocations but keep Eldritch Blast progression same Remove Detect Magic, DR, imbue item, decive item and resistances - Get Improved Unarmed Strike at first level - Gain AC bonus as Monk from Wis - Gain some other minor Monk abilities like Purity of Body and Wholeness of Body That would be about balanced to me I think. Maybe slightly upping the amount of invocations would help (8 would work well, 2 of each level). It loses out on all the tertiary stuff of Warlock and some invocations in favour of better HD, saves and some Monk fringe benefits. Also have Wis determine save DCs for eldritch stuff instead of the normal Cha (although if the class is too powerful keeping the need for both Wis and Cha would be a good balancer) |
| malykoth11-17-05, 06:11 PM | Didn't the Monklocks wipe out the Waronks in some ancient, epic battle? My advice would be to go ahead and actually lay out the progression level by level, and ask yourself when you're done "Is there any reason a munchkin wouldn't play this character, if given the chance?" It's very hard to not overpower our own creations...it's like spoiling your own child, but thinking someone else's is a brat. Also, don't make the mistake of trying to give him weaknesses or flaws to balance out his special nitch advantages. To a true min/maxer, there's really no such thing as a dibilitating flaw...they just design a character that would never rely on whatever the flaw penalizes. After seeing a V 1.0, it might be easier to offer advice. |
| Anshin Mandango11-17-05, 06:19 PM | good point, and i'll start work on version 1.0 shortly, i guess i just wanted some assurance that i wasn't crazy and that this wasn't a compleatly crazy idea. |
| Lord Welkerfan11-17-05, 06:20 PM | Subscribing. I will post my thoughts later. |
| Grizzled Gryphon11-17-05, 06:54 PM | Hmm, this has the earmarks of an interesting class, at the very least. I look forward to the level by level. |
| Anshin Mandango11-17-05, 07:12 PM | version 1.0 now up for critique |
| FlameLover11-17-05, 07:24 PM | Drop the Ki Blast advancement to that of a Rogue's Sneak Attack and it should be pretty balanced. The fact they don't get better unarmed strike, Flurry of Blows and stuff should be balancing enough but I can see a case for dropping a few invocations or monk abilities still. But giving up the Warlocks invocations, vast EB damage and some other stuff for better HD/saves and some Monk stuff seems pretty solid to me :) |

But giving up the Warlocks invocations, vast EB damage and some other stuff for better HD/saves and some Monk stuff seems pretty solid to me :) if i did that, wouldn't he end up with a 10d6 Ki blast at 20th level rather then the 9d6 he has now? |
| FlameLover11-17-05, 07:36 PM | Yeah - oops! - I was thinking of every three levels (1, 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19) that'd give 7d6 which is only a little less but atm it is a pretty nice class (lowering it to 7d6 would make it about as powerful as a Monk instead of it's current power of about a Warlock i think). |
| Anshin Mandango11-17-05, 08:49 PM | okay, the monklock is now officially at version 1.2. also, i added in the special techniques from the invocation list that i felt fit the class flavor wise, since this cuts down on the total choices availble, I would like some ideas on more techniques to fill out the list. also, any marked with an "*?*" are those that i either have doubts about what i did put (because i probally made it up on the spot), or are totally unsure on what to put there. also, we now have some empty levels, any ideas about what should go there, if anything? |
| Seerow11-17-05, 09:26 PM | Here I came in expecting a Monk/Thief hybrid who uses his Ki to pick locks, not blow them away =( Why not just admit your true feelings and call the class "Goku"? |
| Anshin Mandango11-17-05, 09:56 PM | Here I came in expecting a Monk/Thief hybrid who uses his Ki to pick locks, not blow them away =( Why not just admit your true feelings and call the class "Goku"? That's exactly why i had trepidations about posting this idea, it's not goku! That was never my intent, now i've watched as much DBZ as the next guy but if was going to make a clone class there are much better people then that brain-dead monkey, like Ryu from street fighter, but that is all besides the point. the point being that I had a vision of what some phenomally naturally gifted kid in training at a monk school might do with his gift if his gift happend to be an over abundance of Ki power. you can easily say he's gifted with technique if you just roll high for stats and put in max dex, str, wis, and posibly int, but gifted with Ki? you can roleplay it, sure, but you can roleplay anything you want, i just wanted to see if i could make a game mechanic around what one could concivibly do with that much spirit energy and the ability to channel it at will, as this happened to be very similar to the way the warlock works, i went with the warlock's existing mechanic instead of inventing my own in the name of preserving game balance. an exsiting mechanic that includes the eldritch blast which mirrors a blast of Ki energy in any source where that sort of attack is depicted (which, honestly, is mostly anime) |
| l33t Shinobi11-17-05, 10:14 PM | i like it, keep up the cleanup *subscribes* |

I'm thinking dropping the Ki Blast down to 3rd level and moving each one down 2 so you get the final "upgrade" at level 20. In it's place i'd maybe add a Stunning Fist thing so you have a melee option too. That or make it the Ki Blast is a Melee Touch Attack until 3rd level (so basically give Hideous Blow for free I guess). Number of ways you can do it but it needs to have some more heavy-hitters near and the end and Ki Blast needs to start atleast on level 2 (otherwise it's better than the Warlock at level 1). I like the idea of some melee Ki things myself, not sure how to do it though. And i'd add that the Wis to AC is limited by your levels (forget if Monk has that or not but it could be abit too good otherwise). |
| Grizzled Gryphon11-18-05, 02:27 AM | Hmmm, very interesting, grasshopper. |
| Lord Welkerfan11-18-05, 02:32 PM | Perhaps instead of a separate ki blast ability, simply make the monklock able to use its unarmed strike at range and improve the unarmed damage. That way, you can move the blast back to third level without seeming arbitrary. |
| Anshin Mandango11-18-05, 03:53 PM | alright, so move the Ki blast down to 3rd level to avoid frontloading like... Level Fort Ref Will Special Special Techniques known 1st +2 +2 +2 Improved unarmed strike (1d4), AC bonus 1 2nd +3 +3 +3 1 3rd +3 +3 +3 Still mind, Ki blast 1d6 1 4th +4 +4 +4 Improved Unarmed strike (1d6) 2 5th +4 +4 +4 Purity of body 2 6th +5 +5 +5 New special technique (novice or adept) Ki Blast 2d6 3 7th +5 +5 +5 Wholeness of body, 3 8th +6 +6 +6 Improved Unarmed strike (1d8) 3 9th +6 +6 +6 Ki Blast 3d6 4 10th +7 +7 +7 4 11th +7 +7 +7 New Special Technique (novice, adept or advanced), Diamond body Ki blast 4d6 5 12th +8 +8 +8 Improved Unarmed strike (1d10) 5 13th +8 +8 +8 Diamond soul, Improved uarmed strike (2d6) 5 14th +9 +9 +9 Ki blast 5d6 6 15th +9 +9 +9 6 16th +10 +10 +10 New Special Technique (novice, adept, advanced and master), IUS (2d6) 7 17th +10 +10 +10 tongue of the sun and moon, Timeless body Ki blast 6d6 7 18th +11 +11 +11 7 19th +11 +11 +11 Empty body 8 20th +12 +12 +12 Perfect self, Ki blast 7d6, IUS (2d8) 8 this... and add in something in the intern. also is the idea of simply giveing a a monk the abililty to use the unarmed strike at range, which is interesting, but i've already gone pretty far with this route, and i'd like to finish it out like i started if i can. so currently the situation is twofold. One, extra abilities, I propose a "Ki Focus" ability that works along the line of a psionic focus, with other abilities (possibly feats) being based on the Ki focus in a similar manner to how various psionic feats and abilities are based on the psionic focus. also, i added in a lessened unarmed strike damage progression (basicly, i have the ki blasting monk deal unarmed strike damage of one die size lower am unsure about how adding a US dmage progression back in will affect balance though. other ideas i have for more melee special techniques, are a flying kick (charge +either full attack or class levels as bonus damage), Ki whirlwind (whirlwind attack with reach, posibly knockback), Ki flurry (greater flurry, as you have to spend a tech slot to gain it), Moonsault Stomp (multiple spring attacks in one round at progressively lower BAB), a Triple Chain Combo (stuning fist followed by uppercut/Mighty blow, followed by slaming them back down to the ground, should requre 3 attack rolls, a failed save, and two jump checks to pull off in it's entireity), and a Thunder God Stomp (Stomp, as the psionic power). I will go ahead and flesh out any of the above ideas after some more feedback. Secondly: the monklock needs a real name, seriously, "monklock"? I donno, when i think of this class i think of crazy Wire-Fu action stunts, so maybe Wire-Fu fighter? any sugestions would be greatly apreacieated. |
| CaptFrigate11-18-05, 08:07 PM | I made a class kind of like this a while back, but mine was more like a warlock with some monk class features. I had some pretty cool invocations though. Ill link to it if I can find it. Maybe it will give you some ideas. ;) I also have a type of mystic focus you are talking about! |
| CaptFrigate11-18-05, 08:32 PM | I couldn't find the post, but here it is anyway. Mystic In many monasteries around the world, there are monks. These fighters of body and soul are not the only practitioners of the monastic arts. There are also those whose mediations have caused them to gain great spiritual power. These mystics often practice at the vary same monasteries as monks, but some monasteries are more specialized, in order to gain a greater understanding of their powers. These powers resemble arcane magic only in that the users will is being enforced by nonmaterial means. The source of this power, upon further study seems less arcane, as the warlock and wizard. This power more closely resembles divine influence; power being granted from devotion to a cause, or even psionics; power that comes from an awakened internal source. The true origin of the power is debated, or meditated upon, whenever mystics are gathered. The truth is, in fact, that both are correct. Wherever the source, it reacts exactly as though it came from a divine being, and is usually classified as divine magic. Whatever the source, the outcome is the same. Mystics are generally accepted in societies as advisors instead of wizards in kingdoms or other areas that respect a wise mind over a mind weaned on book learning. This gains much disrespect from wizards, who also see the mystics as anomalies, and are thus even more distrustful of them as they are of other divine spellcasters or psionicists. They get along well with most divine spellcasters and psionicists, both of whom share a sense of empathy for the mystic. Wu jens hold and indifferent attitude towards them, but lean more towards the wizard’s views. Sorcerers, surprisingly, quite take to the mystics. This could be for a number of reasons. Often it is because sorcerers respect the wisdom of a mystic and that they do not hold the “holier than thou” attitude held by many other divine spellcasters. It is also common for sorcerers to feel akin to the mystics because they also share the scorn of wizards. Hit Die: d6 Abilities: A high Wisdom is important to a mystic, as is a high Dexterity and Constitution. Alignment: Any Lawful BAB: As Rogue Saves: As Wizard SKILLS The skills for the Mystic, and the ability for each, are: Concentration (Con), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Jump (Str), Knowledge (arcana) (Int), Knowledge (nature) (Int), Knowledge (religion) (Int), Profession (Wis), Spellcraft (Int), Use Magic Device (Cha). Skill points gained at each level: 4 + Intelligence Modifier. PROGRESSION [insert code block here] Weapon and Armor proficiencies: Mystics are proficient with all simple weapons and they gain one martial or exotic weapon proficiency, but they must meet the requirements of such a feat (I.E. a mystic with 11 Str cannot use this proficiency for a bastard sword or a dwarven waraxe). They are proficient with no armor. Mantras – During his training, the mystic gains the ability to use mantras to manipulate the natural mystic energies of the world. At the indicated levels, he gains a mantra of the up to the designated level (Least, Lesser, Greater, or Harmonious). The mantras are not treated as spell-like abilities. They are treated a Spell-Like abilities, but they have not only somatic and verbal components, but also have displays. These components and displays are only to help focus the mind of the mystic. The mantras can be used without them by making a concentration check with a DC equal to that a psion makes to suppress the displays of a psionic power, with a +5 added to the DC for every component ignored, or by expending a mystic focus. The mantras that, by their nature, require movement of the hands or use of the voice cannot be used without that component. Mantras are Wisdom based. Otherwise, treat as the warlock’s Invocation class feature. Mantras qualify as Invocations when qualifying for any feat requiring Invocations, such as Extra Invocation, at the DM’s discretion. Use invocation progression. Chi Blast (Sp) – A burst of bluish-white spiritual energy bursts from his fingertips. The chi blast is as a mantra in that it is a psi-like ability. Chi blast is Wisdom based. It can be used without components in the same manner that a mantra can. Otherwise, treat as eldritch blast. Use standard eldritch blast progression. Mystic Focus (Ex) - The mystic's training allows him to attain a state of focus seldom seen by those not proficent with psionics. The mystic gains the ability to gain a mystic focus, which is mechanically the same as a psionic focus. The mystic qualifies as psionic in regard to qualification for psionic feats. Detect Magic (Sp) – Beginning at 2nd level, the mystic can use detect magic as the spell at will. His caster level equals his class level. Spell Resistance (Su) – At 3rd level, the mystic gains spell resistance equal to his class level plus his Wis modifier. Zen (Ex) – At 3rd, 12th, and 18th levels the mystic may choose one of his class skills and replace the base ability of that skill with Wisdom. The mystic’s supernatural abilities now power this skill. Commune Item (Ex) – Using his innate understanding of all matters spiritual, the mystic can better manipulate his mystical aura. This is otherwise as the warlock’s Deceive Item ability. Still Mind (Ex) – As the monk class feature Deep Meditation (Su) – Beginning at 8th level, the mystic can enter a temporary state of total concentration, gaining fast healing 1 for 2 minutes. He can add an additional point of fast healing when he gains Autohypnosis or Concentration 17, and it improves to fast healing 5 once you gain Autohypnosis or Concentration 20. Imbue Item (Su) – As the warlock ability. Diamond Body (Ex) – As the monk class feature. Timeless Body (Ex) – As the monk class feature. Tongue of the Sun and Moon (Ex) – As the monk class feature. Perfect Self (Ex) – At 20th level the Mystic becomes a magic creature. His is treated as an outsider rather than a humanoid for the purposes of spell and effects. He gains DR 3/magic. He can still be resurrected as though he were still a member of his previous type. Mantra list: Least Mantras- Spirit shout: [Least Mantra: 2nd Level] As the invocation Baleful Utterance Striking presence: [Least Mantra: 2nd Level] As Beguiling Influence Yin and Yang: [Least Mantra: 2nd Level] The mystic uses his knowledge of balance of nature to use darkness or light as the spell Spectral sight: [Least Mantra: 2nd Level] as Devil’s Sight Spiderwalk: [Least Mantra: 2nd Level] as the invocation Earthen Grasp: [Least Mantra: 2nd Level] as the invocation Chi Spear: [Least Mantra: 2nd Level] As Eldritch Spear Chi Strike: [Least Mantra: 1st Level] As Hideous Blow Miasmic Cloud: [Least Mantra: 1st Level] As invocation Entropic Warding: [Least Mantra: 2nd Level] As invocation Fade: [Least Mantra: 2nd Level] The mystic gains a +6 bonus to Move Silently, Hide, and Slight of Hand. If the save is successful, the subject is only stunned for one round. Screaming Blast: [Greater Mantra: 5th Level] Chi blast damage is sonic, and the subject must make a fort save or be stunned for 3 rounds and deafened for one minute. If the save is successful, the subject only suffers the deafness. Bindings of Blazing Air: [Greater Mantra: 5th Level] Targets are bound by flaming bindings that burn even as they hold. Otherwise as Chilling Tentacles. Harmonious Mantras- Debilitating Blast: [Harmonious Mantra: 8th Level] As Utterdark Blast. Banishing Blast: [Harmonious Mantra: 6th Level] At the cost of 2d6 of damage, a chi blast can banish outsiders as the banishment spell, except that the number of HD of outsiders that can be banished is equal to your caster level. If used with a chi essence mantra that increases the number of targets that can be reached by a chi blast, the number of HD you can banish is calculated altogether (I.E. an 18th level mystic using this could banish one pit fiend or eight dretches). Can only be used when mystically focusd Prescience: [Harmonious Mantra: 9th Level] As Dark Foresight Word of Changing: [Harmonious Mantra: 5th Level] As the invocation. Chi Release: [Harmonious Mantra: 8th Level] The Mystic releases his chi energy in all directions. Otherwise as Eldritch Doom. |

| TheSubtlePenguin11-19-05, 01:55 AM | Why don't you remove all the perfect self/still mind/purity of body/diamond body line and make it into an invocation? |
| Anshin Mandango11-19-05, 09:44 AM | CaptFrigate- that class is exactally what i had in mind when designing the monklock. wow, you just single handedly destroyed my motivation for creating this class because everything i wanted out of it you already did, good job. |
| CaptFrigate11-19-05, 11:35 AM | @ TheSubtlePenguin Thats a great idea! Ill get right on it! @ Anshin Mandango Well, dont congradulate me yet, I know there are have to be a couple unblanced things with this class, and I need all the help I can get to fix 'em. I'd would appreciate any help balancing this class. |
