For some reason, I'm fascinated with LOTRO's attempt to make a caster class in Tolkien's style of subtle magic--the Loremaster. So, I thought about how I might be able to design a base class that would be able to stand up in a standard D&D setting.

I was thinking of giving him access to a small subset of spells, maybe in the fashion of the Magewright NPC class from the Eberron setting--where they gain Spell Mastery as a bonus feat every few levels, but no spellbook, so they prepare their daily spells from memory--and giving them access to the more subtle, less overt spells in the D&D canon; mostly some Divination, some Illusion, some Transmutation (but none of the flashy stuff).

In place of big, impressive spells, he'd get several class features that used Knowledge skills to buff the party, similar to the Archivist's Dark Knowledge class feature; and a few other benefits that would help himself and the party in less overtly magical ways.

And, no, I'm not just talking about making a different kind of Bard.

Any ideas?
