I have recently started playing a druid for the first time (lvl 7), and I am loving it. However, i have lots of questions that i would like answered, or i want clarified.
1. When an animal companion gains hd because of the druid lvl, does its size also increase if it gains enough hd to advance?

2. Is there any way to know if an animal, no listed in the druid animal companion list, is suitable to become an animal companion?

3. Druids cant wear metal armor, but can an animal companion wear metal barding?

4.What are the best animals to become an animal companion?

Thanks for all your help. --Stimpson Shortfellow--

1) No, the progression of HD is different than normal. They retain their original size. Unless of course the DM rules it's a young animal and has room to grow...

2) Compare it to other animals in that section of the list, if it's easily more powerful than others, then it's too powerful for that section. If it's noticeably weaker, then it's not powerful enough.

3) Animal companions can wear metal barding. There is no rule stating that they cannot.

4) At first level: Wolf or Riding Dog. Riding Dogs are slightly stronger and have better natural armor. Also pay attention to the tricks you give it. Give it the combat set of tricks so it's "war" trained and riding dogs also can make free trip attacks. At other levels it really depends on what you feel fits your PC. My 8th level Druid currently has a tiger as an animal companion.

Hope this helps some
