Animal Companion For My Rogue...Is There A Way? [Archive] - Wizards Community

02-24-04, 04:52 PM I have a Halfling Rogue, built like a cat burglar, and when he gets to take the Leadership feat, I wanted to get him an animal cohort...a black cat. I checked the stats for the cat in the MM and they sucked. Is there a way to make a cat dangerous, especially if it's your cohort????? Is there a better sneaky animal cohort I can pick up for flavor?

02-24-04, 04:57 PM HMMM....I'm not sure...but you could get a druid to "awaken your cat" and give it levels of rogue. Mouse or Rat would be a nice option as well...but these are even weaker than a cat. Perhaps a large spider, like tarantula would be cool as well...

For the stronger creatures...nah....can't think of anything good right now..I'll get back to you!

02-24-04, 05:56 PM In the 3.0 rules, the Ring of Animal Friendship would allow you to get an Animal Companion with up to 12 HD. In 3.5, it only gives you a bonus on Animal Empathy, which only rangers and druids have.

02-24-04, 10:07 PM Ask your DM about the MMII it has the Grimalkin. A nice sneaky pet. A bard can make a good cohort, they can spread stories of your greatness and heal you to boot!

True .. but it doesn't matter, since you're taking leadership, you'll treat him like a cohort ...

Talk to you DM, and try to work something "weird" into the fray .. maybe you find an animal that used to be a familiar to a wizard and either the wizard died long ago, or dismissed the familiar. Or maybe the critter is from another dimension .. a dimension where his type of animal is the dominant species .. *cough*Planet of the Apes*cough* ... :rolleyes:

02-26-04, 11:49 AM Use the Wild Cohort feat listed by muhammed above, multiclass 1 level into Druid, multiclass 4 levels into Ranger, buy an animal and train it using Handle Animal, or buy a pre-trained animal.

Make up your cohort as normal, then subject him to a Baleful Polymorph. Assuming it makes the Will Save, it retains almost everything including spellcasting abilities. Even if it fails, it keeps the BAB, Saves, hitdice, and other stuff such as sneak attack and skills.

The thing you'd want to be careful of from an effectiveness standpoint is that a housecat is probably classified as a tiny creature... this means it cannot flank.
