I'm new to druids and wondering what benefits there are to either Animal or Elemental companions?

Can either be used as mounts?

What are some of the better choices for either?

My character is 1/2 ogre barb 2/druid 4/stormlord 5

and stormlords get a feat where they can ride the storm as though they were using the fly spell... and there mount can ride it too which I'd like to be able to use

anyways any tips would be greatly appreciated

You can certainly ride an Animal Companion, but it usually needs to be at least one size category larger.
About Elemental Companions... I pesonally wouldn't ride a Fire Elemental. I'm unsure if I would drown in a Water Elemental. Earth Elemental would be great, except when they glide through earth. Air Elemental sounds like the safer of them.

There are other companion options as well. ECS has an alternative, as does one of the Dragon books (Either Races of the Dragon, or Draconomicon, can't remember.)
